2. 10 Bhaddiya
바디야
Thus have I heard. At one time the Lord was staying at Anupiya in the Mango Orchad. At that time the Venerable Bhaddiya, Kaligodha's son, on going into the forest to the foot of a tree or to an empty place, constantly uttered, “Ah, what bliss! An, what bliss!"
A number of bhikkhus heard the Venerable Bhaddiya ... constantly uttering, “Ah, what bliss! Ah, what bliss!" and the thought came to them: “No doubt, friend, the Venerable Bhaddiya, Kaligodha's son, is dissatisfied with leading the holy life, since formerly when he was a householder he enjoyed the bliss of royalty. And when recollecting that, on going into the forest ... he utters, ‘Ah, what bliss! Ah, what bliss'"
Then a number of bhikkhus approached the Lord, prostrated themselves, sat down to one side, and reported this to the Lord.
이와 같이 내가 들었다. 한 때 세존께서 아누피야에 있는 망고 과수원에 계셨다. 그 때에 칼리고다의 아들인 바디야 장로가 숲 속으로 들어가 나무 아래나 빈터에서 끊임없이 “아, 참으로 즐겁구나! 아, 참으로 즐겁구나!”라고 [감탄의 소리를] 해댔다.
수많은 비구들이 바디야 장로가 ..... 끊임없이 “아, 참으로 즐겁구나! 아, 참으로 즐겁구나!”라고 [감탄의 소리를] 해대는 것을 듣고서 그들에게 이런 생각이 들었다. “벗이여! 칼리고다의 아들인 바디야 장로는, 예전에 그가 가장[재가자]이었을 때 왕족으로서 [온갖] 복락(福樂)을 [마음껏] 누렸기 때문에, 성스러운 삶[출가 승려 생활]에 불만스러워하는 게 틀림없소. 그리고 그런 것이 생각날 때면, 숲 속으로 들어가 ..... ‘아, 참으로 즐겁구나! 아, 참으로 즐겁구나!’라고 [감탄의 소리를] 해대는 것이요.”
마침내 수많은 비구들이 세존께 다가가 무릎을 꿇어 [인사를 드리고] 한 쪽에 [떨어져] 앉아서 이 일을 세존께 말씀드렸다.
Then the Lord addressed a certain bhikkhu: “Come, bhikkhu, in my name tell the bhikkhu Bhaddiya, ‘The Teacher calls you, friend Bhaddiya.'"
“Very well, revered sir," the bhikkhu replied and approaching the Venerable Bhaddiya, Kaligodha's son, he said, ”The Teacher calls you, friend Bhaddiya."
“Very well, friend," the Venerable Bhaddiya replied, and approaching the Lord he prostrated himself and sat down to one side. The Lord then said to him: ”Is it true, Bhaddiya, that on going into the forest ... you utter, ‘Ah, what bliss! Ah, what bliss!'?"
“Yes, revered sir."
“But, Bhaddiya, what do you see that prompts you to do so?"
“Formerly, revered sir, when I was a householder and enjoyed the bliss of royalty, inside and outside my inner apartments guards were appointed; inside and outside the city guards were appointed; inside and outside the district guards were appointed. But, revered sir, although I was thus guarded and protected, I lived fearful, agitated, distrustful, and afraid. But now, revered sir, on going alone into the forest, to the foot of a tree or to an empty place, I am fearless, unagitated, confident, and unafraid. I live unconcerned, unruffled, my needs satisfied, with a mind become like a deer's. Seeing this, revered sir, prompts me, on going to the forest ... to utter constantly, ‘Ah, what bliss! Ah, what bliss!'"
Then, on realizing its significance, the Lord uttered on that occasion this inspired utterance:
그러자 세존께서 어떤 한 비구에게 “자, 비구여! 바디야 비구에게 내 이름으로 ‘벗 바디야여! 스승님께서 그대를 부르십니다.’라고 말하시오.”
“그 비구가 “존자님이시여! 잘 알겠습니다.”라고 대답하고 칼리고다의 아들인 바디야 장로에게 다가가 “벗 바디야여! 스승님께서 그대를 부르십니다.”라고 말하였다.
바디야 장로가 “벗이여! 잘 알겠습니다.”라고 대답하고 세존께 다가가 무릎을 꿇어 [인사를 드리고] 한 쪽에 [떨어져] 앉았다. 그러자 세존께서 그에게 “바디야여! 그대가 숲 속으로 들어가 .... ‘아, 참으로 즐겁구나! 아, 참으로 즐겁구나!’라고 [감탄의 소리를] 해댄다는 것이 사실이요?”라고 말씀하셨다.
“존자님이시여! 그러하옵니다.”
“바디야여! 그렇다면 그대가 그렇게 하도록 자극·재촉하는 것이 무엇이라고 보시오?”
“존자님이시여! 예전에 제가 가장으로 왕족의 복락을 누리고 있었을 때에는 제가 [사는] 내궁(內宮) 안팎으로 경비를 세웠고, 성 안팎으로 경비를 세웠으며, [왕도] 구역 안팎으로 경비를 세웠습니다. 존자님이시여! 그렇지만 그렇게 경비를 세워서 지켰는데도 저는 두렵고 동요하여 떨고 있었으며 믿지 못하고 의심이 많아졌으며 불안했었습니다. 존자님이시여! 그런데 지금은 숲 속으로 들어가 나무 아래나 빈터에 있어도, 저는 두렵지 않고 동요해 떨지 않으며 확신이 서고 불안하지 않습니다. [이제] 저는 걱정하지도 않고 침착하게, 욕구는 [모두] 충족되었으며, 마치 사슴의 것과 같은 마음으로 살아가고 있습니다. 존자님이시여! 이런 것을 보는 것이 저를 재촉해서 숲 속으로 들어가 .... ‘아, 참으로 즐겁구나! 아, 참으로 즐겁구나!’라고 [감탄의 소리를] 합니다.”
그 때, 그것의 의미·중요성을 깨달으시고서 세존께서는 바로 그 순간 영감을 주는 이러한 게송을 읊으셨다.
In whom exist no inner stirrings,
Having passed beyond being this or that,
Free from fear, blissful and sorrowless,
The devas are not capable of seeing him.
내부에 아무런 혼란이 없으며
‘이렇다’, ‘저렇다’라는 것을 초월해서,
두려움에서 벗어나 자유롭고, 복되며 고통이 없는 이,
신들[이라고 해도] 그를 볼 수 없네.
