2.5 The Lay Follower
재가 신도
Thus have I heard. At one time the Lord was staying near Savatthi in the Jeta Wood at Anathapindika's monastery. On that occasion a certain lay follower from Icchanangala had arrived at Savatthi on some business or other. Then, when that business in Savatthi had been completed, the lay follower approached the Lord, prostrated himself, and sat down to one side. As he was sitting there the Lord said to that lay follower: “At last, lay follower, you have found an opportunity to come here."
“For a long time, revered sir, I have wanted to come and see the Lord, but being involved with various affairs of business that had to be done I was just not able to come personally and see the Lord.”
Then, on realizing its significance, the Lord uttered on that occasion this inspired utterance:
이와 같이 내가 들었다. 한때 세존께서 사밧티[舍衛城] 근처 젯타 숲에 있는 아나타핀디카의 수도원[祇園精舍]에 머물고 계셨다. 그 때에 이차난가라 출신의 어떤 한 재가 신도가 이런 저런 볼일이 있어서 사밧티에 도착하였다. 사밧티에서 일이 다 끝나자 그 재가 신도는 세존께 다가와 엎드려 [인사를 드리고] 한 쪽에 [떨어져] 앉았다. 그가 거기에 앉자 세존께서 그 재가 신도에게 “재가 신도여! 마침내 그대가 여기에 올 기회를 찾았구려.”라고 말씀하셨다.
“존자님이시여! 오랜 동안, 와서 세존을 뵙고 싶었습니다만 처리해야 할 여러 가지 사업상의 일에 얽혀서 직접 와서 세존을 뵐 수 없었습니다.”
그 때, 그것의 의미·중요성을 깨달으시고서 세존께서는 바로 그 순간 영감을 주는 이러한 게송을 읊으셨다.
Blissful indeed is it to own nothing
When one is learned and has mastered the Dhamma.
See how people who own things are afflicted,
For people are strongly bound to people.
진리 법을 배워서 통달하였을 때는
실상 아무 것도 소유하지 않는 것이 축복이네.
사람은 사람에게 강하게 속박되어 있기 때문에
무엇인가를 소유한 사람들이 어떻게 괴로움을 당하는지 보시게.
