5.1 The King
왕
Thus have I heard. At one time the Lord was staying near Savatthi in the Jeta Wood at Anathapindika’s monastery. On that occasion King Pasenadi of Kosala had gone to the upper storey of the royal palace with Queen Mallika. Then King Pasenadi of Kosala said to Queen Mallika, “Is there anyone, Mallika, dearer to you than yourself?"
“There is no one, great king, dearer to me than myself. But is there anyone, great king, dearer to you than yourself?"
“Neither is there anyone, Mallika, dearer to me than myself."
Then King Pasenadi of Kosala descended from the palace and went to visit the Lord. On approaching the Lord, he prostrated himself, sat down to one side, and reported this conversation.
Then, on realizing its significance, the Lord uttered on that occasion this inspired utterance:
이와 같이 내가 들었다. 한 때 세존께서 사밧티 근처 젯타 숲에 있는 아나타핀디카[給孤獨長者]의 수도원[祇園精舍]에 머물고 계셨다. 그 때 코살라의 파세나디 왕이 말리카 왕비와 함께 왕궁의 위층으로 올라갔다. 코살라의 파세나디 왕이 말리카 왕비에게 “말리카여! 그대에게 누군가 그대 자신보다 더 소중한 사람이 있으시오?”라고 물었다.
“대왕이시여! 제게 제 자신보다 소중한 사람은 아무도 없습니다. 그런데, 대왕이시여! 그대에게 누군가 그대 자신보다 더 소중한 사람이 있으십니까?”
“말리카여! 내게도 나 자신보다 더 소중한 사람은 없지요.”
그리고 나서 코살라의 파세나디 왕은 궁에서 내려와 세존을 찾아뵈러 갔다. 세존께 다가간 그는 무릎을 꿇어 [인사를 드리고] 한 쪽에 [떨어져] 앉아 [왕비와 나누었던] 이 대화를 되풀이해 말씀 드렸다.
그 때, 그것의 의미·중요성을 깨달으시고서 세존께서는 바로 그 순간 영감을 주는 이러한 게송을 읊으셨다.
On traversing all directions with the mind
One finds no one anywhere dearer than oneself.
Likewise everyone holds himself most dear,
Hence one who loves himself should not harm another.
마음을 다 기울여 곳곳을 왔다 갔다 하여도
자기 자신보다 소중한 사람은 어디에서도 찾지 못하네.
그와 마찬가지로 모든 사람들이 자신을 가장 소중하다고 여기니,
자기 자신을 사랑하는 사람은 다른 사람을 해치면 안 되리.
