Question: Do you think that a person with very little understanding can ever reach a level of higher understanding? In other words, when one’s accumulations have conditioned one’s character, is there anything that can be done about it? Is it possible to improve one’s degree of understanding?
질문 : 바른 견해가 거의 없는 사람이 수준 높은 바른 견해에 이를 수 있다고 생각하십니까? 다른 말로, 어떤 사람의 견해가 성격을 결정지운다고 하면 거기에 뭔가 해 볼 수 있는 여지가 있는지요? 바른 견해를 향상시킬 가능성이 있습니까?
Nina: Everything can be done about it: wisdom can be developed very gradually and thus one’s accumulations can be changed. Those who have a higher level of understanding can and should help other people to develop a higher level of understanding as well. I shall give an example. Children can become novices. They share the life of the monks in order to learn more about the Buddhist teachings and to make merit for their parents who can rejoice in their good deeds.
대답 : 많은 것을 할 수 있습니다. 지혜는 매우 점진적으로 계발되며 축적된 성향도 바뀔 수 있습니다. 높은 수준의 바른 견해를 가진 사람은 다른 사람도 역시 바른 견해를 가질 수 있도록 도와주어야 합니다. 예를 하나 들어보겠습니다. 사미가 된 아이가 있습니다. 그들은 부처님의 가르침을 더 많이 배우고 선행을 하여 부모님에게 기쁨을 주고 자랑스럽게 여기시도록 승려들과 생활을 함께 합니다.
Many people think that the person who makes merit can literally transfer his own good deeds to other people, dead or alive. This is not the right understanding. It is not possible to transfer merit to other people, because everyone will receive the result of his own deeds. Older monks who have reached a higher level of understanding can help the novices to have more understanding about the wholesome act they are per-forming.
많은 사람들은 훌륭한 일을 하는 사람들이 그 자신의 선행을 살아있거나 이미 죽은 다른 사람에게 옮겨줄 수 있다고 생각합니다. 이것은 바른 견해가 아닙니다. 다른 사람에게 선행을 옮겨줄 수는 없습니다. 왜냐하면 사람들은 모두 자기 자신이 지은 행위의 결과를 받기 때문입니다. 바른 견해의 더 높은 수준에 이른 나이든 승려는 사미들이 더욱 수준 높은 바른 견해를 가질 수 있도록 도울 수 있습니다.
If they could understand correctly the meaning of the merit they make, their renunciation would be even more fruitful. The novices are performing a very wholesome act in renouncing the company of their relatives in order to study the Buddhist teachings and to train themselves in the precepts, which are moral rules. This gives them a good spiritual foundation for their whole life.
만일 그들이 하는 일의 의미를 바르게 이해한다면 더욱 더 뜻 깊을 것입니다. 사미는 부처님의 가르침을 배우고 윤리적인 규율인 계를 지켜 자기 자신을 단련시키기 위해 출가한 것은 큰 선행을 하고 있는 것입니다. 이것은 그들의 전 생애동안 좋은 정신적인 토대가 될 것입니다.
They will receive the fruit of this wholesome act themselves. The merit they make cannot literally be transferred to other people. However, other people, no matter whether they are deceased or still alive, can have wholesome states of mind inspired by the good deeds of someone else. Their own wholesome mental states will bring them a wholesome result. So parents, even deceased parents, if they are in planes of existence where they can rejoice in the good deeds of their child, may have wholesome states of mind and these will bring wholesome results in the future. The expression "transfer of merit" is a misleading one, because it does not give us the understanding of the real cause and effect.
그들은 이러한 선행의 과보를 스스로 받을 것입니다. 그들이 한 좋은 일은 글자 그대로 다른 사람에게 옮겨가지 않습니다. 하지만 다른 사람들은, 살아있거나 죽었거나 간에, 그들이 선한 마음상태에 있다면 다른 사람의 선행에 의해서 고무 받을 것입니다. 그들 자신의 선한 마음은 선한 결과를 가져올 것입니다. 그래서 부모님, 이미 작고한 부모님조차도 자녀들의 선행에 기뻐할 수 있는 존재계에 있다면 좋은 마음을 가질 것입니다. 그리고 이러한 것들이 미래에 선과보를 가져옵니다. 선행이 옮겨간다는 표현은 잘못된 것입니다. 왜냐하면 그것은 우리에게 실재하는 원인과 결과라는 견해를 가져다주지 못하기 때문입니다
