24. A Heap of Bones
뼈 무더기
This was said by the Lord....
"Bhikkhus, the skeletons of a single person, running on
and wandering in samsara for an aeon, would make a heap
of bones, a quantity of bones as large as this Mount Vepulla,
if there were someone to collect them and if the collection
were not destroyed."
세존께서 이렇게 말씀하셨다고.... [나는 들었다].
“비구들이여! 만약 누군가가 그것들을 끌어 모으고 그 모아놓은 것들을 없애지 않는다면, 한 겁 동안 윤회 속에 이리 저리 헤맸던 단 한 사람의 뼈가 이 베풀라 산[廣普山] 만큼이나 커다란 뼈 무더기를 만들 수 있을 것이오.”
The bones of a single person
Accumulated in a single aeon
Would make a heap like mountain -
So said the Great Sage.
He declared it to be
As great as Mount Vepulla
To the north of Vulture's Peak
In the bill-fort of Magadha.
But when one sees with perfect wisdom
The four noble truths as they are -
Suffering, the origin of suffering,
The overcome of suffering,
And the noble eightfold path
Leading to relief from suffering -
Having merely run on
Seven times at the most,
By destroying all fetters
One makes an end of suffering.
단 한 겁에 쌓인
단 한 사람의 뼈가
산처럼 [커다란] 무더기를 만들게 될 것이라고.
위대한 성인께서 그렇게 말씀하셨네.
그것은 마가다의 언덕-요새에 있는
독수리 봉[靈鷲山] 북쪽의
베풀라 산만큼이나 커다랗다고
그 분께서는 선언하셨네.
그렇지만 원만한 지혜로
- 괴로움[苦諦], 괴로움의 원인[集諦],
괴로움의 극복[滅諦],
그리고 괴로움에서 벗어나게 해주는
여덟 가지 성스러운 길[八正道] -
네 가지 성스러운 진리[四聖諦]를 있는 그대로 보면,
아무리 많아도 일곱 번만
[윤회 속에] 떠돌고 난 뒤
온갖 속박 소멸하여
괴로움을 끝내게 되네.
