22. Meritorious Deeds
가치 있는 행위[功德行]
This was said by the Lord....
“Bhikkhus, do not fear meritorious deeds. This is an expression denoting happiness, what is desirable, wished for, dear and agreeable, that is, ‘meritorious deeds.' For I know full well, bhikkhus, that for a long time I experienced desirable, wished for, dear and agreeable results from often performing meritorious deeds.
Having cultivated for seven years a mind of loving-kindness, for seven aeons of contraction and expansion I did not return to this world. Whenever the aeon contracted I reached the plane of Streaming Radiance, and when the aeon expanded I arose in an empty Brahma-mansion. And there I was a Brahma, the Great Brahma, the Unvanquished Victor, the All-seeing, the All-powerful. Thirty-six times I was Sakka, the ruler of the devas. And many hundreds of times I was a Wheel-turning Monarch, righteous, a king of righteousness, conqueror of the four quarters of the earth, maintaining stability in the land, in possession of the seven jewels. What need is there to speak of mere local kingship?
It occurred to me, bhikkhus, to wonder: ‘Of what kind of deed of mine is this the fruit? Of what deed's ripening is it that I am now of such great accomplishment and power?' And then it occurred to me: ‘It is the fruit of three kinds of deeds of mine, the ripening of three kinds of deeds that I am now of such great accomplishment and power: deeds of giving, of self-mastery, and of refraining.'"
세존께서 이렇게 말씀하셨다고.... [나는 들었다].
“비구들이여! 가치 있는 행위[功德行]를 두려워하지 마시오. 이것[功德行]은 행복, [사람들이] 바라고 원하며 아끼고 기분 좋은 것, 즉 ‘가치 있는 행위’를 나타내는 표현이지요. 비구들이여! 종종 가치 있는 행위를 짓는 데에서 바라고 원하며 아끼고 기분 좋은 결과를 내가 오랜 동안 체험했음을 나는 온전하게 잘 알기 때문이요.
7년 동안 자비심을 닦고 난 뒤, 나는 [세계가] 수축[消滅]과 확장[生成]을 일곱 겁에 걸쳐 겪는 동안 나는 이 세상에 돌아오지 않았소. 겁[세계]이 수축될 때마다 나는 빛이 흐르는 곳[光音天]에 이르렀었고, 겁[세계]이 확장될 때에 나는 텅 빈 브라흐마의 궁전[梵天宮]에 태어났소. 그리고 그곳에서 나는 브라흐마[梵天], 위대한 브라흐마[大梵天]. 정복되지 않는 승리자, 모든 것을 보는 이, 모든 것에 위력이 있는 이었소. 서른 여섯[36] 차례나 나는 신들의 지배자인 삭카[帝釋天]였었소. 그리고 수백 번에 걸쳐 나는 정의롭고, 정의의 군주, 지구의 네 구석을 정복한 정복자로서 이 땅에 안정을 유지하고 일곱 가지 보배를 가진 전륜성왕(轉輪聖王)이었소. 하잘 것 없는 지방의 [작은 왕국] 왕위에 대해서야 말할 필요가 있겠소?
비구들이여! 내게 [다음과 같이] 기이하게 여기는 생각이 일어났소. ‘이것은 어떤 종류의 내 행위에 대한 과보일까? 무슨 행위가 무르익어서 지금 내가 그와 같은 위대한 성취와 위력을 가진 사람이 되었을까?’ 그리고 나서 내게 [이런 생각이 또] 일어났소. ‘내가 지금 그와 같은 위대한 성취와 위력을 지닌 사람이 된 것은 내 세 가지 행위의 과보, 세 가지 행위가 무르익은 것이니, [그 세 가지는] 보시․자제와 금욕의 행위이다.’”
One should train in deeds of merit
That yield long-lasting happiness:
Generosity, a balanced life,
Developing a loving mind.
By cultivating these three things,
