Question: Do you find that you can verify the Abhidhamma in your daily life?
질문 : 일상생활에서 아비담마를 증명할 수 있는지요?
Nina: It was a great discovery for me to find that the Abhidhamma can be verified in daily life, although one can in the beginning experience only part of the realities the Abhidhamma explains.
대답 : 비록 처음에는 아비담마에서 설명하고 있는 실재를 부분만 경험하지만 내가 일상생활에서 아비담마를 경험할 수 있다는 것을 안 것은 큰 경험이었습니다.
At first one might think that the Abhidhamma is too subtle and one might doubt whether it is useful to study the many different degrees of ignorance and wisdom, but one learns that each of these different degrees brings its corresponding result. In studying the Abhidhamma one learns to understand more about other people as well. One learns that people are different because of different accumulations of experiences in the past. Because of these different accumulations people behave differently.
아비담마를 처음 접한 사람들은 아비담마가 너무나 미묘해서 지혜와 무지의 여러 수준들을 면밀히 검토하는 것이 유용한지 아닌지 의심할 수도 있다. 그러나 이러한 여러 수준들은 그에 상응하는 결과를 가져온다는 사실을 알아야 한다. 아비담마를 공부하면 다른 사람에 대해서도 더 잘 이해할 수 있다는 것을 안다. 사람들은 과거에 축적된 경험이 다르기 때문에 서로 다르다는 것을 알아야 한다. 축적된 것이 다르기 때문에 사람들은 다르게 행동한다.
At each moment one accumulates new experiences and this conditions what one will be like and what one will experience in the future. When we understand more about the different accumulations of different people, we are less inclined to judge other people. When we see people paying respect to the Buddha with apparently very little understanding we know that their accumulations are thus and that they are performing a wholesome act according to their ability.
새로운 경험을 축적할 때마다 이것은 우리가 미래에 어떤 사람이 될지, 어떤 경험을 하게 될지 조건 지운다. 다양한 사람들이 여러 가지 다양한 것을 축적하고 있다고 알면 사람들을 판단할 때 편견을 덜 가지게 된다. 바른 견해도 없이 겉으로만 붓다를 경배하는 사람들을 보면 축적된 성향이 그러하므로 그들의 능력에 따라 선행을 한다는 것을 알 수 있다.
