6.9 Insects
벌레[비천한 인간]들
Thus have I heard. At one time the Lord was staying near Savatthi in the Jeta Wood at Anathapindika’s monastery. On that occasion on a very dark night the Lord was sitting in the open air and oil-lamps were burning. Now at that time many flying insects were coming to misfortune and destruction by falling into those oil-lamps. The Lord saw those flying insects coming to misfortune and destruction by falling into those oil-lamps.
Then, on realizing its significance, the Lord uttered on that occasion this inspired utterance:
이와 같이 내가 들었다. 한 때 세존께서 사밧티 근처 젯타 숲에 있는 아나타핀디카[給孤獨長者]의 승원[祇園精舍]에 머물고 계셨다. 그 때 매우 어두운 밤에 세존께서 [건물] 밖에 앉아 계셨는데 기름 등잔이 타고 있었다. 그 때 마침 많은 날벌레들이 날아와 그 기름 등잔들에 떨어져서 불운과 파멸을 맞고 있었다.
그 때, 그것의 의미·중요성을 깨달으시고서 세존께서는 바로 그 순간 영감을 주는 이러한 게송을 읊으셨다.
Rushing headlong and missing the essence,
They bring about renewed bondage.
Like insects falling into the flame
Some are intent only on what is seen and heard.
앞뒤를 헤아리지 않고 달려들어 본질을 잃어버리고,
그들은 새로운 속박을 일어나게 하네.
불꽃 속으로 떨어지는 벌레들처럼
어떤 사람들은 [눈에] 보이고 [귀로] 들리는 것들에만 몰두하고 있네.
