6.8 The Courtesan
À¯³à(ë´Ò³)
Thus have I heard. At one time the Lord was staying near Rajagaha in the Bamboo Wood at Squirrels' Feeding Place.
At that time there were two factions enamoured of and infatuated with a certain courtesan. They were quarrelsome, disputatious, and wrangling, and attacked each other with their fists, with clods of earth, with staves, and with weapons, so that they went to their death or suffered near to death.
Then a number of bhikkhus, having put on their robes in the forenoon and taken their bowls and outer cloaks, entered Rajagaha for almsfood. Having walked in Rajagaha for almsfood and returned after the meal, they approached the Lord, prostrated themselves, sat down to one side, and said to the Lord: ¡°At present, revered sir, there are two factions ... or suffered near to death."
Then, on realizing its significance, the Lord uttered on that occasion this inspired utterance:
ÀÌ¿Í °°ÀÌ ³»°¡ µé¾ú´Ù. ÇÑ ¶§ ¼¼Á¸²²¼­ ¶óÀÚ°¡ÇÏ ±Ùó ´ë³ª¹« ½£¿¡ ÀÖ´Â ´Ù¶÷Áã »çÀ°Àå¿¡ ¸Ó¹°°í °è¼Ì´Ù.
±× ¶§ ¾î¶² ÇÑ À¯³à¿¡°Ô ¸ÅȤµÇ°í ¾óÀÌ ºüÁø µÎ ¹«¸®°¡ ÀÖ¾ú´Ù. ±×µéÀº ¸»´ÙÅùÀ» ÇÏ°í ³íÀïÀ» ¹úÀÌ°í ÀÖ¾úÀ¸¸ç, ¼­·Î ÁÖ¸Ô¡¤Èë µ¢¾î¸®¡¤¸·´ë±â¿Í âĮ·Î °ø°ÝÇÏ¿© Á×À½¿¡ À̸£°Å³ª Á×À» Á¤µµ·Î [½ÉÇÑ] °íÅëÀ» °Þ¾ú´Ù.
±× ¶§¿¡ ¼ö¸¹Àº ºñ±¸µéÀÌ ¿ÀÀü Áß¿¡ ¿ÊÀ» ÀÔ°í ¹ß¿ì¿Í °Ñ¿ÊÀ» Áö´Ï°í Ź¹ßÀ» ÇÏ·¯ ¶óÀÚ°¡ÇÏ·Î µé¾î°¬´Ù. Ź¹ßÀ» Çϱâ À§ÇØ ¶óÀÚ°¡ÇÏ¿¡¼­ °É¾î ´Ù´Ï°í ½Ä»ç¸¦ ¸¶Ä£ µÚ µ¹¾Æ¿Â ±×µéÀº ¼¼Á¸²² ´Ù°¡°¡ ¹«¸­À» ²Ý¾î [Àλ縦 µå¸®°í] ÇÑ ÂÊ¿¡ [¶³¾îÁ®] ¾É¾Æ ¼¼Á¸²² ¡°½º½Â´ÔÀ̽ÿ©! Áö±Ý µÎ ¹«¸®°¡ Àִµ¥, ..... ¾Æ´Ï¸é Á×À» Á¤µµ·Î [½ÉÇÑ] °íÅëÀ» °Þ°í ÀÖ½À´Ï´Ù.¡±¶ó°í ¸»¾¸ µå·È´Ù.
±× ¶§, ±×°ÍÀÇ Àǹ̡¤Á߿伺À» ±ú´ÞÀ¸½Ã°í¼­ ¼¼Á¸²²¼­´Â ¹Ù·Î ±× ¼ø°£ ¿µ°¨À» ÁÖ´Â ÀÌ·¯ÇÑ °Ô¼ÛÀ» À¼À¸¼Ì´Ù.
What has been attained and what is still to be attained ¡ª both these are littered with dust for a frail person who trains after (one with wrong view). Those who hold training as the essence, or who hold virtue-and vow, pure livelihood, celibacy, and service as the essence ¡ª this is one extreme. And those with such theories and such views as ¡°There is no fault in sensual desires" ¡ª this is the second extreme. Both these extremes cause the cemeteries to grow, and the cemeteries cause wrong views to grow. By not penetrating these two extremes some hold back and some go too far. But for those who penetrated them, and were no more found among them, and who did not conceive on this account, there is no round for the manifestation of them.
ÀÌ¹Ì ¾òÀº °Í°ú ¾ÆÁ÷ ¾ò¾î¾ß ÇÒ °Í - (À߸øµÈ °ßÇظ¦ °¡Áø »ç¶÷À») µû¶ó ¼öÇàÇÏ´Â Çã¾àÇÑ »ç¶÷¿¡°Ô´Â ÀÌ µÑÀÌ ´Ù Ƽ²ø·Î µÚµ¤¾îÁ® ÀÖ³×. ¼öÇàÀ» ¿äü·Î ¿©±â´Â »ç¶÷µé ¾Æ´Ï¸é °è¿Í ¼­¿ø¡¤Ã»Á¤ÇÑ »ýÈ°¡¤±Ý¿å »ýÈ°[¼ø°á]°ú ºÀ»ç¸¦ ¿äü·Î »ï´Â »ç¶÷µé – ÀÌ°ÍÀÌ ÇϳªÀÇ ±Ø´ÜÀ̳×. ¡°°ü´ÉÀû ¿å¸Á¿¡´Â À߸øÀÌ ¾ø´Ù¡±¿Í °°Àº À̷аú °ßÇظ¦ °¡Áø »ç¶÷µé – ÀÌ°ÍÀÌ µÎ ¹ø° ±Ø´ÜÀ̳×. ÀÌ µÎ ±Ø´ÜÀº [°¥¾Ö¿Í ¾î¸®¼®À½ÀÇ] ¹«´ýÀ» ÀÚ¶ó³ª°Ô ÇÏ´Â ¿øÀÎÀÌ°í, [°¥¾Ö¿Í ¾î¸®¼®À½ÀÇ] ¹«´ýÀÌ À߸øµÈ °ßÇظ¦ Ä¿³ª°¡°Ô ÇÏ´Â ¿øÀÎÀ̳×. ÀÌµé µÎ ±Ø´ÜÀ» ²ç¶Õ¾îº¸Áö ¸øÇÏ¿©, ¾î¶² »ç¶÷µéÀº ¸Á¼³ÀÌ°í ¾î¶² »ç¶÷µéÀº ³Ê¹« ¸Ö¸®±îÁö °¡³×. ±×·¸Áö¸¸ ±×°ÍµéÀ» ²ç¶Õ¾î º¸¾Æ ´õ ÀÌ»ó ±×°Íµé ¾È¿¡ ¸Ó¹°Áö ¾Ê´Â »ç¶÷µé°ú ÀÌ°Í¿¡ ±â´ë¸¦ ÇÏÁö ¾ÊÀº »ç¶÷µé¿¡°Ô´Â ±×°ÍµéÀ» µå·¯³» ÁÙ ¼øȯÀÌ Çϳªµµ ¾ø³×.
