6.2 The Jatila Ascetics
결발 수행자들
Thus have I heard. At one time the Lord was staying near Savatthi in the Eastern Park in Migara's mother's mansion. On that occasion the Lord had emerged from seclusion in the evening and was sitting outside the gate. The King Pasenadi of Kosala approached the Lord, prostrated himself, and sat down to one side.
At that moment, not far from the Lord, there passed by seven Jatila ascetics, seven Niganthas (Jains), seven naked ascetics, seven single-garment ascetics, and seven wanderers, all with hairy bodies and long nails and carrying (their requisites in) a bundle on a shoulder pole. King Pasenadi of Kosala saw those (groups of) seven passing by not far from the Lord. On seeing them he arose from his seat, arranged his robe over one shoulder, knelt down with his right knee on the ground, and raising his folded hands towards those (groups of) seven, he announced his name three times thus: “Revered sirs, I am King Pasenadi of Kosala!" Then, soon after the departure of those (groups of) seven, King Pasenadi of Kosala approached the Lord (again), prostrated himself, sat down to one side, and said to the Lord: “Revered sir, could any one of those be among those in the world who are arahats or who have entered the path to arahatship?”
이와 같이 내가 들었다. 한 때 세존께서 사밧티 근처 동부 공원에 있는 미가라 어머니의 저택에 머물고 계셨다. 그 때 세존께서는 홀로 [선정에 드셨다가] 저녁에 깨어 일어나시어 문 밖에 앉아 계셨다. 코살라의 파세나디 왕이 세존께 다가와 무릎을 꿇어 [인사를 드리고] 한 쪽에 [떨어져] 앉았다.
바로 그 순간 세존에게서 멀지 않은 곳에서 자틸라[結髮] 수행자 일곱[7] 명, 니간타(자이나교도) 일곱[7] 명, 나체 수행자 일곱[7] 명, 옷을 한 벌 입은 수행자 일곱[7] 명과 편력 수행자 일곱[7] 명이 지나가고 있었는데, 그들은 모두 온 몸이 털로 뒤덮이고 손톱·발톱을 길게 기른 채 어깨에 멘 막대에 달린 짐 보따리(에 생활 필수품들을) 나르고 있었다. 그들 일곱 명(의 그룹들)이 세존에게서 멀지 않은 곳으로 지나가고 있는 것을 코살라의 파세나디 왕이 보았다. 그들을 보자 그는 자기 자리에서 일어나 옷을 한 쪽 어깨에 걸치고 오른 쪽 무릎을 땅에 대고서 그들 일곱 명(의 그룹들)에게 합장한 손을 들어 [인사를 하고] 이와 같이 자기 이름을 세 번 알렸다. “스승님들이시여! 나는 코살라의 파세나디 왕입니다!” 그리고 나서 그들 일곱 명(의 그룹들)이 떠나고 나서 곧바로 코살라의 파세나디 왕이 세존께 다가와 무릎을 꿇어 [인사를 드리고] 한 쪽에 [떨어져] 앉아 세존께 “스승님! 저들 가운데 어떤 사람이 이 세상에서 아라한들 아니면 아라한과를 [성취하는] 길에 들어선 사람들이 될 수 있겠습니까?”라고 말씀 드렸다.
“Great king, being a layman enjoying the pleasures of the senses, living at home with the encumbrance of children, making use of sandalwood (perfume) from Kasi, wearing garlands, scents and unguents, and handling gold and silver, it is difficult for you to know whether or not these are arahats or whether they have entered the path to arahatship. It is by living with a person that his virtue is to be known, great king, and then only after a long time, not after a short period; and only by considering it, not without consideration; and only by one who is wise, not by a fool. It is by associating with a person that his purity is to be known .... It is in adversity that a person's fortitude is to be known .... It is by discussion with a person that his wisdom is to be known, great king, and then only after a long time, not after a short period; and only by considering it, not without consideration; and only by one who is wise, not be a fool."
“대왕이시여! 감관의 쾌락을 만끽하고, 아이[자식]들 같은 부양 가족들과 함께 집에서 살며, 카시 산(産)의 전단나무 (향)을 사용하고, 꽃다발·가루 향과 연고[바르는 향; 화장품]를 걸치고 바르며 그리고 금·은을 지니는 재가자들인 그대들이 저들이 아라한들인지 아닌지 아니면 그들이 아라한과를 [성취하는] 길에 들어선 사람들인지 알기는 어렵습니다. 대왕이시여! 그의 덕행을 알게 되는 것은, 잠시 동안이 아니라 오랜 동안 그 사람과 생활을 해보아야 하며, 심사숙고를 하지 않으면 안되고 그것을 곰곰 따져 보아야만 하며, 어리석은 사람이 아니라 현명한 사람만이 할 수 있습니다. 그의 청정함을 알게 되는 것은 함께 생활을 해 보아야 하며 ..... 한 사람의 인내력을 알게 되는 것은 역경에 처했을 때이며 .... 대왕이시여! 한 사람의 지혜를 알게 되는 것은, 잠시 동안이 아니라 오랜 동안 그와 대화를 나누어보아야 하며, 심사숙고를 하지 않으면 안되고 그것을 곰곰 따져 보아야만 하며, 어리석은 사람이 아니라 현명한 사람만이 할 수 있습니다.”
“It is wonderful, revered sir! It is marvellous, revered sir! How well this has been said by the Lord. These, revered sir, are my men in disguise, informers who are returning after spying on the country. First information is gathered by them and afterwards I will make them disclose it. Now, revered sir, when they have washed off the dust and mud, are well bathed and perfumed, and have trimmed their hair and beards and dressed themselves in white garments, they will go about given to and provided with the five kinds of sensual pleasure."
Then, on realizing its significance, the Lord uttered on that occasion this inspired utterance:
“스승님이시여, 불가사의한 일이옵니다! 스승님이시여, 경탄할 만한 일이옵니다! 세존께서는 [아주] 훌륭하게 이것을 말씀하셨습니다. 스승님이시여! 이들은 나라 [구석구석]을 정찰한 뒤에 돌아오는 첩자, 변장한 제 부하들입니다. 제1차 정보는 그들이 수집하고 그 뒤에 제가 그것[필요한 정보]을 찾아낼 것입니다. 스승님이시여! 이제 그들이 먼지와 흙투성이를 씻어낸 뒤에 깨끗이 목욕을 하고 향수를 뿌리고 머리와 수염을 다듬고 흰옷을 차려 입고서는 다섯 가지 감각적 쾌락이 갖추어진 곳을 돌아다니게 될 것입니다.”
그 때, 그것의 의미·중요성을 깨달으시고서 세존께서는 바로 그 순간 영감을 주는 이러한 게송을 읊으셨다.
One should not strive everywhere,
One should not be another’s man..
One should not live depending on another,
One should not make a business of Dhamma.
[가리지 않고] 아무 곳에서나 노력을 하면 안 되고
다른 사람의 [말을 무조건 듣는] 부하가 되면 안 되네.
다른 사람에 의존해서 살아가면 안 되고
진리 법을 [돈벌이] 사업으로 삼으면 안 되네.
