4.9 Upasena
우파세나
Thus have I heard. At one time the Lord was staying near Rajagaha in the Bamboo Wood at the Squirrels’ Feeding Place. Then, while the Venerable Upasena Vangantaputta was in seclusion, this thought arose in his mind: “It is a gain for me; it is a great gain for me, that my teacher is the Lord, the Arahat, the Fully Awakened One; that I have gone forth from home to the homeless state in this well-taught Dhamma and discipline; that my fellows in the holy life are virtuous and of good conduct; that I have fulfilled the moral virtues; that I am concentrated and unified of mind; that I am a arahat who is free from the taints; that I am of great supernormal potency and power. Fortunate has been my life and fortunate will be my death!”
Then the Lord understood with his mind the thought in the mind of the Venerable Upasena Vangantaputta, and uttered on that occasion this inspired utterance:
이와 같이 내가 들었다. 한 때 세존께서 라자가하 근처 대나무 숲[竹林]에 있는 다람쥐 사육장에 머물고 계셨다. 그 때 우파세나 반간타풋타 장로가 홀로 머무르고 있는 동안에 그의 마음에 이런 생각이 일어났다. “‘내 스승님이 아라한, 원만하게 깨달으신 분[正覺佛]인 세존이시라는 것’, ‘집을 떠나 잘 설해진 이 진리 법과 계율로 [이루어진] 집 없는 곳으로 출가한 것’, ‘성스러운 삶을 살고 있는 내 도반들이 계를 지키고 행실이 훌륭한 것’, ‘내가 계를 제대로 지켜온 것’, ‘내가 정신 집중[三昧]을 하여 마음을 통일한 것’, ‘내가 때[煩惱]에서 벗어나 자유로운 아라한이라는 것’, ‘내가 신통력을 가졌다는 것’은 내게 이득, 큰 이득이네. [이제까지의] 내 삶은 행운이었고, 내 죽음 [또한] 상서로울 것이네!.”
그 때, 그것의 의미·중요성을 깨달으시고서 세존께서는 바로 그 순간 영감을 주는 이러한 게송을 읊으셨다.
Whose life causes no remorse
And who sorrows not as death,
The wise one who has seen that state
Sorrows not in the midst of sorrow.
For a bhikkhu whose mind is calmed,
Who has destroyed the craving for being,
The wandering on in births is finished;
There is no further being for him.
일생 동안 가책받을 일을 하지 않고
죽음에 임해서 슬퍼하지 않는 사람,
그런 경지를 보아온 현자(賢者)는
슬픔 한가운데 있어도 슬퍼하지 않네.
자기 마음을 고요히 하고
생존에 대한 갈망을 부수어버린 비구에게는
태어남들[生死輪廻] 안에서 헤매는 일은 끝났으니
그에게 더 이상 생존은 하나도 없네.
