3.8 The Almsfood Collector
Ź¹ßÀÚ
Thus have I heard. At one time the Lord was staying near Savatti [¿ø¹®¿¡´ÂRajagaha] in the Jeta Wood at Anathapindika¡¯s monastery. On that occasion after the meal, on returning from collecting almsfood, a number of bhikkhus had gathered together in the kareri-tree pavilion when this topic of conversation arose: ¡°An alsmfood-collecting bhikkhu, friends, while walking for almsfood, from time to time gets to see agreeable forms with the eye, from time to time gets to hear agreeable sounds with the ear, from time to time gets to smell agreeable odours with the nose, from time to time gets to taste agreeable flavours with the tongue, from time to time gets to touch agreeable tangible objects with the body. An almsfood-collecting bhikkhu, friends, when he walks for almsfood, is respected, revered, honoured, venerated, and given homage. Come, friends, let us all be almsfood-collectors, and we too from time to time will get to see agreeable forms with the eye ... to touch agreeable tangible objects with the body. And we too will be respected, revered, honoured, venerated, and given homage when we walk for almsfood." And this conversation of those bhikkhus continued without coming to an end.
ÀÌ¿Í °°ÀÌ ³»°¡ µé¾ú´Ù. ÇÑ ¶§ ¼¼Á¸²²¼­ »ç¹åƼ ±Ùó Á¬Å¸ ½£¿¡ ÀÖ´Â ¾Æ³ªÅ¸ÇɵðÄ«[Ðå͵Լíþíº]ÀÇ ¼öµµ¿ø[Ѷê®ïñÞì]¿¡ ¸Ó¹°°í °è¼Ì´Ù. ±× ¶§ Ź¹ß¿¡¼­ µ¹¾Æ¿Í °ø¾çÀ» ¸¶Ä£ ¼ö¸¹Àº ºñ±¸µéÀÌ Ä«·¹¸® ³ª¹«[·Î ¸¸µç] °¡¼³ °Ç¹°¿¡ ÇÔ²² ¸ð¿©ÀÖÀ» ¶§ ÀÌ·± ÁÖÁ¦ÀÇ ´ëÈ­°¡ ÀϾ´Ù. ¡°¹þµéÀÌ¿©! Ź¹ßÀ» ÇÏ·¯ ´Ù´Ï´Â ºñ±¸°¡ Ź¹ßÀ» ÇÏ·¯ °É¾î´Ù´Ï´Â µ¿¾È¿¡, ´«À¸·Î´Â ¶§¶§·Î ¸¶À½¿¡ µå´Â Çü»óÀ» º¸°Ô µÇ°í, ±Í·Î´Â ¶§¶§·Î ¸¶À½¿¡ µå´Â °ÍÀ» µè°Ô µÇ¸ç, Äڷδ ¶§¶§·Î ¸¶À½¿¡ µå´Â ³¿»õ¸¦ ¸Ã°Ô µÇ°í, Çô·Î´Â ¶§¶§·Î ¸¶À½¿¡ µå´Â ¸ÀÀ» º¸°Ô µÇ¸ç ¸öÀ¸·Î´Â ¶§¶§·Î ¸¶À½¿¡ µå´Â ´ë»óÀ» Á¢ÃËÇϱ⵵ ÇÕ´Ï´Ù. ¹þµéÀÌ¿©! Ź¹ßÀ» ÇÏ·¯ ´Ù´Ï´Â ºñ±¸°¡ Ź¹ßÀ» ÇÏ´À¶ó ¸»À» ÇÒ ¶§¿¡´Â, Á¸°æ¡¤°ø°æ¡¤°æÀÇ¿Í °æ¹è¸¦ ¹Þ½À´Ï´Ù. ÀÚ, ¹þµéÀÌ¿©! ¿ì¸® ¸ðµÎ Ź¹ßÀÚ°¡ µÇ¸é ¿ì¸®µµ ´«À¸·Î´Â ¶§¶§·Î ¸¶À½¿¡ µå´Â Çü»óÀ» º¸°í,¡¦ ¸öÀ¸·Î´Â ¸¶À½¿¡ µå´Â ´ë»óÀ» Á¢ÃËÇÏ°Ô µÉ °ÍÀÔ´Ï´Ù. ±×¸®°í Ź¹ßÀ» ÇÏ·¯ °É¾î´Ù´Ï´Â µ¿¾È¿¡, ¿ì¸®µéµµ Á¸°æ¡¤°ø°æ¡¤°æÀÇ¿Í °æ¹è¸¦ ¹Þ°Ô µÉ °ÍÀÔ´Ï´Ù.¡± ±× ºñ±¸µéÀÌ ³ª´©´Â ÀÌ·± ´ëÈ­°¡ ³¡³ªÁö ¾Ê°í °è¼ÓµÇ¾ú´Ù.
Then the Lord, emerging from seclusion in the evening, went to the kareri-tree pavilion and sat down on the seat prepared for him. Sitting there, the Lord asked the bhikkhus: ¡°What were you talking about just now, bhikkhus, while gathered here together? What was the topic of discussion that you had left unfinished?"
¡°After the meal, revered sir, on returning from collecting almsfood, we had gathered here in the kareri-tree pavilion when this topic of conversation arose: ¡®An almsfood-collecting bhikkhu, friends, while walking for almsfood, from time to time gets to see agreeable forms with the eye ... to touch agreeable tangible objects with the body. And we too will be respected ... when we walk for almsfood.' This, revered sir, was our discussion that was left unfinished when the Lord arrived."
¡°It is not right, bhikkhus, that you sons of good family who have gone forth out of faith from home to homeless state should talk on such a topic. When you have gathered together, bhikkhus, you should do one of two things; either engage in talk on Dhamma or maintain noble silence."
Then, on realizing its significance, the Lord uttered on that occasion this inspired utterance:
±× ¶§, Àú³á ¹«·Æ Ȧ·Î [¼±Á¤¿¡ µå¼Ì´Ù°¡] ÀϾ½Å ¼¼Á¸²²¼­ Ä«·¹¸® ³ª¹«[·Î ¸¸µç] °¡¼³ °Ç¹°·Î °¡¼Å¼­ ´ç½ÅÀ» À§ÇØ ¸¶·ÃµÈ ÀÚ¸®¿¡ ¾ÉÀ¸¼Ì´Ù. ±×°÷¿¡ ¾ÉÀ¸½Å ¼¼Á¸²²¼­ ºñ±¸µé¿¡°Ô ¹°¾îº¸¼Ì´Ù. ¡°ºñ±¸µéÀÌ¿©! ¹Ù·Î Áö±Ý, ¿©±â¿¡ ÇÔ²² ¸ð¿© ÀÖ´Â µ¿¾È¿¡ ¹«¾ù¿¡ ´ëÇØ À̾߱âÇÏ°í ÀÖ¾ú³ª¿ä? ¹«¾ùÀÌ ±×´ëµéÀÌ ³¡³»Áö ¸øÇÏ°í ³²°ÜµÐ Åä·Ð ÁÖÁ¦¿´³ª¿ä?¡±
¡°Á¸ÀÚ´ÔÀ̽ÿ©! Ź¹ß¿¡¼­ µ¹¾Æ¿Í °ø¾çÀ» ¸¶Ä£ ¼ö¸¹Àº ÀúÈñµéÀÌ Ä«·¹¸® ³ª¹«[·Î ¸¸µç] °¡¼³ °Ç¹°¿¡ ÇÔ²² ¸ð¿©ÀÖÀ» ¶§ ÀÌ·± ÁÖÁ¦ÀÇ ´ëÈ­°¡ ÀϾ½À´Ï´Ù. ¡°¹þµéÀÌ¿©! Ź¹ßÀ» ÇÏ·¯ ´Ù´Ï´Â ºñ±¸°¡ Ź¹ßÀ» ÇÏ·¯ °É¾î´Ù´Ï´Â µ¿¾È¿¡, ´«À¸·Î´Â ¶§¶§·Î ¸¶À½¿¡ µå´Â Çü»óÀ» º¸°í, .... ¸öÀ¸·Î´Â ¶§¶§·Î ¸¶À½¿¡ µå´Â ´ë»óÀ» Á¢ÃËÇϱ⵵ ÇÕ´Ï´Ù. ±×¸®°í Ź¹ßÀ» ÇÏ·¯ °É¾î´Ù´Ï´Â µ¿¾È¿¡, ¿ì¸®µéµµ Á¸°æ....À» ¹Þ°Ô µÉ °ÍÀÔ´Ï´Ù.¡¯ Á¸ÀÚ´ÔÀ̽ÿ©! ÀÌ°ÍÀÌ, ¼¼Á¸²²¼­ µµÂøÇϼÌÀ» ¶§ ³¡³»Áö ¸øÇÏ°í ³²°ÜµÎ¾ú´ø ´ëÈ­¿´½À´Ï´Ù.¡±
¡°ºñ±¸µéÀÌ¿©! ¹ÏÀ½¿¡¼­ [¿ì·¯³ª¿Í] ÁýÀ» ¶°³ª Áý ¾ø´Â »óÅ·ΠÃâ°¡¸¦ ÇÑ, ÁÁÀº °¡¹® Ãâ½ÅÀÇ ¾ÆµéµéÀÎ ±×´ëµéÀÌ ±×¿Í °°Àº ÁÖÁ¦·Î À̾߱⸦ ÇÏ´Â °ÍÀº ¿ÇÁö ¾Ê¼Ò. ºñ±¸µéÀÌ¿©! ±×´ëµéÀÌ ÇÔ²² ¸ð¿´À» ¶§¿¡´Â, µÎ °¡Áö Áß Çϳª, Áø¸® ¹ý¿¡ °üÇÑ À̾߱â[ÛöÓÈ]¸¦ Çϵ簡 °í±ÍÇÑ Ä§¹¬À» ÁöÅ°µç°¡ ÇÏ¿©¾ß ÇÏ¿À.¡±
±× ¶§, ±×°ÍÀÇ Àǹ̡¤Á߿伺À» ±ú´ÞÀ¸½Ã°í¼­ ¼¼Á¸²²¼­´Â ¹Ù·Î ±× ¼ø°£ ¿µ°¨À» ÁÖ´Â ÀÌ·¯ÇÑ °Ô¼ÛÀ» À¼À¸¼Ì´Ù.
The devas hold dear such a bhikkhu
Who collects his food on alms round,
Self-sufficient, supporting no other,
But not if he is intent on praise and fame.

Ź¹ßÀ» µ¹¾Æ¼­ À½½ÄÀ» ¸ðÀ¸´Â »ç¶÷,
