2.8 Suppavasa
수파바사
Thus have I heard. At one time the Lord was staying at Kundiya in the Kunditthana Wood. On that occasion Suppavasa the Koliyan daughter had been pregnant for seven years and for seven days had experienced difficult labour. But although she experienced feelings that were acute, painful, sharp, and severe, her mind was occupied with three thoughts: “The Lord is indeed a Fully Enlightened One, who teaches Dhamma for abandoning such suffering as this; the Order of the Lord's disciples is indeed progressing on the right path, following a path to abandon such suffering as this; Nibbana is indeed perfect bliss, where such suffering is not found.”
이와 같이 내가 들었다. 한때 세존께서 쿤디야에 있는 타쿤디타나 숲에 머물고 계셨다. 그 때에 콜리야족의 딸인 수파바사가 7년 동안 임신하고 있다가 7일 동안 힘든 산통(産痛)을 겪고 있었다. 그런데 그녀는 격심하고 고통스러우며 날카롭고 심각한 느낌을 체험했음에도 불구하고, 그녀의 마음은 세 가지 생각으로 가득 찼었다. “세존께서는 바로 이와 같은 괴로움을 버리기 위해서 진리 법을 가르치시는 원만하게 깨달으신 분이시다. 세존의 제자들의 승단은 바로 이와 같은 괴로움을 버리는 길을 따라서, 올바른 길로 나아가고 있다. 닙바나는 실로 완벽한 축복이니, 그곳에는 그와 같은 괴로움이 없다.”
Then Suppavasa the Koliyan daughter said to her husband: “Come, master, go to the Lord and approaching him in my name, worship the Lord with your head at his feet, and ask concerning his health and well-being, fitness, strength, and comfort, saying: ‘Suppavasa the Koliyan daughter, revered sir, worships the Lord with her head at his feet and asks concerning his health and well-being....' And also say: ‘Suppavasa, revered sir, has been pregnant for seven years and for seven days has experienced difficult labour. But although she experiences feelings that are acute ... her mind has been occupied with three thoughts; <The Lord is indeed a Fully Enlightened One ... Nibbana is indeed perfect bliss, where such suffering is not found.>'"
“Very well," replied the Koliyan son to Suppavasa, and he approached the Lord, prostrated himself and sat down at one side. Sitting there he said to the Lord, “Suppavasa the Koliyan daughter, revered sir, worships the Lord with her head at his feet ... But although she experiences feelings that are acute ... her mind has been occupied with three thoughts....”
그 때 콜리야족의 딸인 수파바사가 자기 남편에게 “여보! 자, 세존께 가셔서 제 이름으로 그 분께 다가가, 그 분 발에 당신 머리를 대어 예배를 드리시고 그 분께서 건강하시고 편안하신 지 또 건강상태·기력은 어떠신 지 그리고 쾌적하신 지에 관해서 ‘존자님이시여! 콜리야족의 딸인 수파바사가 그 분 발에 자기 머리를 대어 예배를 드리고 그 분께서 건강하시고 편안하신 지, ....에 관해서 여쭙니다.’라고 말씀드리면서 여쭈어 주세요. 그리고 또한 ‘존자님이시여! 수파바사가 7년 동안 임신하고 있다가 7일 동안 힘든 산통(産痛)을 겪었습니다. 그런데 그녀가 격심하고 ....한 느낌을 체험했음에도 불구하고, 그녀의 마음은 <세존께서는 .... 원만하게 깨달으신 분이시다. .... 닙바나는 실로 완벽한 축복이니, 그곳에는 그와 같은 괴로움이 없다.>는 세 가지 생각으로 가득 차 있었습니다.’라고도 말씀해 주세요.”
콜리야족의 아들이 [아내인] 수파바사에게 “잘 알겠소.”라고 대답하고서 세존께 다가가 무릎을 꿇어 [인사를 드리고] 한 쪽에 [떨어져] 앉았다. 거기에 앉은 그가 세존께 “존자님이시여! 콜리야족의 딸인 수파바사가 그 분 발에 자기 머리를 대어 예배를 드리고 .... 그런데 그녀가 격심하고 ....한 느낌을 체험했음에도 불구하고,.... 그녀의 마음은 세 가지 생각으로 가득 차 있었습니다....”라고 말씀드렸다.
“May Suppavasa the Koliyan daughter be well and healthy and give birth to a healthy son."
When the Lord had spoken these words, Suppavasa the Koliyan daughter became well and healthy and gave birth to a healthy son.
The Koliyan son, saying, “So be it, revered sir," pleased and appreciative of the Lord's words, arose from his seat, prostrated himself to the Lord, and keeping his right side towards him returned home.
And the Koliyan son saw that Suppavasa was well and healthy and had given birth to a healthy son. On seeing this he thought: “It is indeed wonderful, it is indeed marvellous, the great supernormal potency and power of the Tathagata! When those words were spoken by the Lord, Suppavasa became well and healthy and gave birth to a healthy son.” And he was pleased and delighted and became joyful and happy.
“콜리야족의 딸인 수파바사는 편안하고 건강하며 건강한 아들을 낳을지어다!”
세존께서 이 말씀을 하셨을 때, 콜리야족의 딸인 수파바사는 편안하고 건강해져서 건강한 아들을 낳았다.
콜리야족의 아들은 세존의 말씀에 기분이 좋아지고 감사하여, “존자님이시여! 잘 알겠습니다.”라고 말씀드리면서 세존께 무릎을 꿇어 [인사를 드리고] 그 분을 향해 오른쪽으로 돌아서 집으로 돌아갔다.
그리고 콜리야족의 아들은 수파바사가 편안하고 건강해져서 건강한 아들을 낳은 것을 보았다. 이것을 보자 그는 “여래의 크나큰 신통력과 위력은 실로 불가사의하구나, 참으로 경탄할만 하구나! 세존께서 그 말씀을 하시자, 수파바사가 편안하고 건강해져서 건강한 아들을 낳았다니.”라고 생각하였다. 그리하여 그는 기쁨에 겨워 즐겁고 행복하게 되었다.
Then Suppavasa said to her husband: “Come, master, go to the Lord and approaching him in my name, worship the Lord with your head at his feet and say: ‘Suppavasa the Koliyan daughter, revered sir, worships the Lord with her head at his feet.' And also say: ‘Suppavasa, revered sir, was pregnant for seven years and for seven days experienced difficult labour. She is now well and healthy and has given birth to a healthy son. She invites the Order of bhikkhus to a meal for seven days. Please consent, revered sir, to Suppavasa's providing seven meals for the Lord together with his Order of bhikkhus.'"
“Very well," replied the Koliyan son to Suppavasa, and he approached the Lord ... and said: “Suppavasa the Koliyan daughter, revered sir, worships the Lord with her head at his feet ... She is now well and healthy and has given birth to a healthy son. Please consent, revered sir, to Suppavasa's providing seven meals for the Lord together with the Order of bhikkhus.'"
그 때 콜리야족의 딸인 수파바사가 자기 남편에게 “여보! 자, 세존께 가셔서 제 이름으로 그 분께 다가가, 그 분 발에 당신 머리를 대어 예배를 드리시고 ‘존자님이시여! 콜리야족의 딸인 수파바사가 그 분 발에 자기 머리를 대어 예배를 드립니다.’라고 말씀드려 주세요. 그리고 또한 ‘존자님이시여! 수파바사가 7년 동안 임신하고 있다가 7일 동안 힘든 산통(産痛)을 겪었습니다. 이제 그녀는 편안하고 건강해져서 건강한 아들을 낳았습니다. 그녀가 비구들의 승단을 7일 동안 공양에 초대합니다. 존자님이시여! 비구들의 승단과 함께 세존을 위하여 7일 동안 공양 대접하는 것을 받아 주시옵소서.’라고도 말씀드려 주세요.”
콜리야족의 아들이 [아내인] 수파바사에게 “잘 알겠소.”라고 대답하고서 세존께 다가가 ..... “존자님이시여! 콜리야족의 딸인 수파바사가 그 분 발에 자기 머리를 대어 예배를 드립니다 .... 이제 그녀는 편안하고 건강해져서 건강한 아들을 낳았습니다. 존자님이시여! 비구들의 승단과 함께 세존을 위하여 7일 동안 공양 대접하는 것을 받아 주시옵소서.”
Now at that time a certain lay follower had invited the Order of bhikkhus headed by the Buddha to a meal the next day, and that lay follower was the supporter of the Venerable Mahamoggallana. Then the Lord called the Venerable Mahamoggallana and said: “Come, Moggallana, go to that lay follower and say: ‘Friend, Suppavasa the Koliyan daughter invites the Order of bhikkhus headed by the Buddha to a meal for seven days. Allow Suppavasa to give her seven meals.' Your supporter can give his afterwards."
“Very well, revered sir," the Venerable Mahamoggallana replied to the Lord, and he went to that lay supporter and repeated what the Lord had said.
“If, revered sir, the noble Mahamoggallana will be my surety for three things - for wealth, life, and faith - then let Suppavasa the Koliyan daughter give her seven meals and I will give mine afterwards."
“For two of these things, friend, I will be your surety, for wealth and life; but as for faith, you are your own surety."
“If, revered sir, the noble Mahamoggallana will be my surety for two things, for wealth and life, I allow Suppavasa to give her seven meals. I will give mine afterwards."
그런데 그 때 마침 어떤 한 재가 신도가 부처님께서 이끌고 계시는 비구들의 승단을 그 다음날 공양에 초대하였는데, 그 재가 신도는 마하목갈라나 존자의 후원자였다. 그러자 세존께서 마하목갈라나 존자를 불러서 “자, 목갈라나여! 그 재가 신도에게 가서 ‘벗이여! 콜리야족의 딸인 수파바사가 세존께서 이끌고 계시는 비구들의 승단을 7일 동안 공양에 초대하였습니다. 수파바사가 7일 동안 공양을 낼 수 있게 해주시오.’라고 말씀하세요. 그대의 후원자는 훗날에 공양을 낼 수 있을 것이오.”라고 말씀하셨다.
마하목갈라나 존자는 세존께 “존자님이시여! 잘 알겠습니다.”고 대답을 드리고 그 재가 후원자에게 가서 세존께서 말씀하신 것을 되풀이해 말했다.
“존자님이시여! 만약 존귀하신 마하목갈라나께서 제게 세 가지, 즉 재산, 수명과 신심에 대해 보증해 주신다면, 그렇다면 수파바사가 7일 동안 공양을 낼 수 있게 하고 제 [공양 대접]은 훗날에 내겠습니다.”
“벗이여! 재산과 수명, 두 가지에 대해서는 내 그대에게 보증하겠지만 신심에 대해서는 그대 자신이 보증하여야지요.”
“존자님이시여! 만약 존귀하신 마하목갈라나께서 제게 재산과 수명, 두 가지에 대해 보증해 주신다면, 그렇다면 수파바사가 7일 동안 공양을 낼 수 있게 하고 제 [공양 대접]은 훗날에 내겠습니다.”
Then the Venerable Mahamoggallana, having obtained the consent of that lay follower, approached the Lord and said: “That lay follower of mine has consented, revered sir. Let Suppavasa the Koliyan daughter give her seven meals. He will give his afterwards."
So Suppavasa the Koliyan daughter, with her own hand, served and satisfied the Order of bhikkhus headed by the Buddha with sumptuous solid and soft food for seven days. And she made her child pay homage to the Lord and the whole Order of bhikkhus. Then the Venerable Sariputta said to the child: “Are you well, child? Are you healthy? Have you any pain?”
그 때 마하목갈라나 존자는 그 재가 신도의 동의를 얻었으므로, 세존께 다가가 “존자님이시여! 그 재가 신도가 동의하였습니다. 수파바사가 7일 동안 공양을 낼 수 있게 하시지요. 그 사람의 [공양 대접]은 훗날에 낼 것입니다.”고 말씀드렸다.
그렇게 해서 콜리야족의 딸인 수파바사는 7일 동안 부처님께서 이끄시는 비구들의 승단에 [매우] 풍성한 딱딱하고 부드러운 음식물을 손수 돌보아드려서 흡족케 해드렸다. 그리고 자기 아이가 세존과 전체 비구 승단에 예배를 드리도록 하였다. 그 때 사리풋타 장로가 그 아이에게 “아가야, 기분이 괜찮으냐? [몸은] 건강하냐? 무슨 힘든 일이라도 있냐?”고 말하였다.
“How, revered Sariputta, can I be well? How can I be healthy? I have spent seven years in a cauldron of blood.”
Then Suppavasa, (reflecting) “My son is conversing with the general of the Dhamma," was pleased and delighted and became joyful and happy. Then the Lord said to Suppavasa: “Do you wish you could have another such son?"
“I wish, Lord, I could have seven more such sons!"
Then, on realizing its significance, the Lord uttered on that occasion this inspired utterance:
“사리풋타 존자님! 제가 어찌 기분이 좋을 수 있겠습니까? 어찌 건강할 수 있겠어요? 저는 피의 가마솥에서 7년 동안이나 [세월을] 보냈는데요.”
그러자 수파바사는 “내 아들이 진리 법의 장수[法將]와 대화를 나누고 있구나”라고 (곰곰 생각하면서), 기쁘고 즐거워하고 또 행복해졌다. 그 때 세존께서 수파바사에게 “그대는 이런 아들을 또 하나 [더] 갖고 싶으신가요?”라고 말씀하셨다.
“세존이시여! 이런 아들을 일곱[만] 더 갖고 싶사옵니다!”
그 때, 그것의 의미·중요성을 깨달으시고서 세존께서는 바로 그 순간 영감을 주는 이러한 게송을 읊으셨다.
Discomfort in the guise of pleasure,
The unloved in the guise of love,
Suffering in the guise of bliss
Overpower the heedless one.
계를 지키는 주의 깊은 사람은
불쾌하고 고생스러운 것을 즐거운 듯이,
좋아하지 않는 것을 좋아하는 듯이,
괴로움을 축복인 듯이 해서 압도하네.
