1. 6 Mahakassapa
마하카삿파
Thus have I heard. At one time the Lord was staying near Rajagaha in the Bamboo Wood at the Squirrel’s Feeding Place. At that time the Venerable Mahakassapa, while staying in the Pipphali Cave, became sick, afflicted, grievously ill. Then after a while the Venerable Mahakassapa recovered from the sickness and thought, “What if I should enter Rajagaha for alsmfood?”
At that time five hundred devatas were busily preparing almsfood for the Venerable Mahakassapa. But having refused the offerings of those five hundred devatas, the Venerable Mahakassapa robed himself in the forenoon, and taking his bowl and outer cloak, entered Rajagaha for almsfood, going to those streets occupied by the poor and needy, the streets of the weavers.
Now the Lord saw the Venerable Mahakassapa in Rajagaha walking for almsfood in those streets occupied by the poor and needy, the streets of the weavers.
Then, on realizing its significance, the Lord uttered on that occasion this inspired utterance.
이와 같이 내가 들었다. 한때 세존께서 라자가하[王舍城] 근처 대나무 숲[竹林]에 있는 다람쥐 사육장[녹자모 강당]에 머물고 계셨다. 그 때에 마하카삿파 장로가 핍팔리 동굴에 머물던 중 병에 들어 괴로움을 겪고 심하게 아프게 되었다. 얼마 안 있다가 마침내 마하카삿파 장로는 질병에서 회복되자 “탁발을 하러 라자가하로 들어가면 어떨까?”라고 생각하였다.
그 때에 하늘 사람들 500명이 마하카삿파 장로를 위해서 공양을 바삐 준비하고 있었다. 그렇지만 마하카삿파 장로는, 그 하늘 사람들 500명의 제안을 거절하고서 오전 중에 옷을 입고, 발우와 겉옷을 지니고 탁발을 하러 라자가하로 들어가서 빈곤자들이 사는 거리, 베 짜는 사람들의 거리로 갔다.
그런데 세존께서 마하카삿파 장로가 라자가하의 빈곤자들이 사는 거리, 베 짜는 사람들의 거리에서 탁발을 하러 걸어 다니는 것을 보셨다.
그 때, 그것의 의미·중요성을 깨달으시고서 세존께서는 바로 그 순간 영감을 주는 이러한 게송을 읊으셨다.
Not supporting another and unknown,
Controlled, set firm in the essential,
With taints destroyed and rid of faults,
Him I call a brahmin.
또 다른 사람을 부양하지 않고 알려지지 않은 사람,
[마음이] 제어되고 근본이 확고한 사람,
때[번뇌]를 [모두] 부수어버리고 잘못을 없애버린 사람,
나는 그를 바라문이라 부르네.
