Thus have I heard. At one time the Lord was staying near Savatthi in the Jeta Wood at Anathapindika’s monastery. At that time the Venerable Sariputta, the Venerable Mahamoggallana, the Venerable Mahakassapa, the Venerable Mahakaccayana, the Venerable Mahakotthita, the Venerable Mahakappina, the Venerable Mahacunda, the Venerable Anuruddha, the Venerable Revata, and the Venerable Nanda were approaching the Lord. Seeing those venerable ones coming, the Lord said to the bhikkhus: “Those are brahmins who are coming, bhikkhus, those are brahmins who are coming.”When this was said a certain bhikkhu, who was a brahmin by birth, asked the Lord: “How, revered sir, is one a brahmin and what are the things that make one a brahmin?”Then, on realizing its significance, the Lord uttered on that occasion this inspired utterance
The awakened ones who have destroyed the fetters –
They are the brahmins in the world.
사악한상태를 [다] 쫓아내버리고
항상마음을챙기는사람들,
속박을 [모두] 멸해온깨친사람들 –
그들이야말로세상의바라문들이네.

4. 1-5 . 장로의 경[Therasutta]

이와 같이 나는 들었다. 한 때 세존께서 싸밧티 시의 제따 숲에 있는 아나타삔디까 승원에 계셨다.

그 때 존자 싸리뿟따와 존자 마하 목갈라나와 존자 마하 깟싸빠와 존자 마하 깟차야나와 존자 마하 꼿티따와 존자 마하 깝삐나와 존자 마하 쭌다와 존자 아누룻다와 존자 레바따와 존자 아난다가 세존께서 계신 곳으로 다가왔다. 세존께서는 그 존자들이 멀리서 오는 것을 보았다. 보고나서 이와 같이 말했다.
[세존] “수행승들이여, 저기 바라문들이 온다. 저기 바라문들이 온다.”

이처럼 말씀하시자 바라문 출신의 수행승이 세존께 이처럼 여쭈었다.
[수행승]
“세존이시여, 어떻게 바라문이 되는 것입니까? 바라문이 되는 원인이 되는 원리는 무엇입니까?”
