Thus have I heard. At one time the Lord was staying at Uruvela ... for seven days experiencing the bliss of liberation. Then, at the end of the those seven days, the Lord … gave well-reasoned attention during the last watch of the night to dependent arising in both forward and reverse order, thus:
“This being, that is; from the arising of this, that arises; this not being, that is not; from the cessationof this, that ceases. That is: with ignorance as condition, volitional activities come to be; ... with birth as condition, ageing-and-death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair come to be. This is the origin of this whole mass of suffering.
But from the complete disappearance and cessation of ignorance, volitional activities cease; ... from the cessation of birth, ageing-and-death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair cease. This is the ceasing of this whole mass of suffering.”
Then, on realizing its significance, the Lord uttered on that occasion this inspired utterance:
이와 같이 내가 들었다. 한때 세존께서 우루벨라의 ... 에서 해탈의 기쁨을 맛보면서 7일 동안 .... 계셨다. 그리고는 그 7일의 마지막 날에 세존께서 그 삼매(三昧; 마음 집중)에서 나오셔서 그 밤의 마지막 시각에 연기에 대해 순관과 역관(逆觀)으로 조리에 잘 맞추어 이와 같이 주의를 기울이셨다.
“이것이 있으므로 저것이 있다. 이것이 일어남으로서 저것이 일어난다. 이것이 없으므로 저것이 없다. 이것이 소멸함으로서 저것이 소멸한다. 다시 말하면, 어리석음[無明]을 조건으로 해서 의지적 활동[行]이 존재하게 되고, ... 태어남을 조건으로 해서 늙음-죽음과 슬픔·비탄·괴로움·고뇌·절망이 있게 된다. 이것이 이 모든 고통의 덩어리의 근원이다.
어리석음[無明]이 완전히 사라지고 소멸하므로 의지적 활동[行]이 소멸하고, .... 태어남이 소멸하므로 늙음-죽음과 슬픔·비탄·괴로움·고뇌·절망이 소멸한다. 이것이 이 모든 고통의 덩어리의 소멸이다.”
그 때, 그것의 의미·중요성을 깨달으시자 세존께서는 바로 그 순간 영감을 주는 이러한 게송을 읊으셨다.
When things become manifest
To the ardent meditating brahmin,
He abides scattering Mara’s host
Like the sun illuminating the sky.
