91. A Means of Subsistence
생활 수단
This was said by the Lord....
“Bhikkhus, this is a contemptible means of subsistence, this gathering of alms. In the world, bhikkhus, it is a form of abuse to say, ‘You alms-gatherer! Wandering about clutching a bowl!' Yet this means of subsistence has been taken up by young men of good family for a reason, for a purpose. They have not been reduced to it by kings nor by robbers nor because of debt nor through fear nor from loss of an alternative means of livelihood, but with the thought: ‘We are beset by birth, ageing and death, by sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair; overcome by suffering, afflicted by suffering. Perhaps an end can be discerned of this whole mass of suffering!'
So this young man of good family has gone forth (into homelessness), but he may be covetous for objects of desire, strongly passionate, malevolent, corrupt in thought, unmindful, uncomprehending, unconcentrated, of wandering mind and uncontrolled faculties. Just as a brand from a funeral pyre, burnt at both ends and in the middle smeared with excrement, can be used as timber neither in the village nor in the forest, so by such a simile do I speak about this person: he has missed out on the enjoyments of a householder, yet he does not fulfil the purpose of recluseship."
세존께서 이렇게 말씀하셨다고.... [나는 들었다].
“비구들이여! 이것, 이 탁발은 멸시할 만한 생활 수단이지요. 비구들이여! 세상에서 ‘어이, 그대 탁발 걸식자! 발우를 움켜잡고서 헤매는구먼!’이라고 말하는 것은 욕설의 한 형태지요. 그러나 좋은 가문 출신의 젊은 사람들이 이유가 있고 목적이 있어서 이런 생활 수단을 택해 왔지요. 그들은 왕이나 도둑들이 그렇게 하도록 억지로 시켜서 한 것이 아니며 빚 때문도 아니고 겁이 나서도 아니며 다른 생계 수단을 잃어서도, 아니고 다만 ‘우리들은 태어남[生]․늙음과 죽음[老死]에 의해, 슬픔[憂]․비탄[悲]․고통[苦]․깊은 고뇌[惱]와 절망에 의해 괴로움을 당하고; 고통 때문에 맥을 못 추고, 고통 때문에 괴로움을 겪고 있다. 아마도, 이 고통 덩어리 전체의 끝을 제대로 알 수 있겠지!’라는 생각으로 [그렇게 해왔던 것이오.]
그래서 좋은 가문 출신의 이 젊은 사람이 (집 없는 상태로) 출가를 하였지만, 그는 [아직도] 욕망의 대상에 대해 갈망하고, 욕정이 매우 강하며, 악의가 있고, 생각이 더러우며, 마음을 챙기지 않고, 분별력이 없으며, 마음을 집중하지 못하고, 마음이 [안정되지 않아] 오락가락 하며 감관이 제어되지 않았을 수도 있지요. 화장용 장작더미에서 [꺼낸], 양쪽 끝은 타버리고 가운데는 똥이 더럽게 묻은 타다 남은 나무가 마을에서도 숲에서도 목재로 쓰일 수 없는 것처럼, 이 사람에 대해서 나는 그와 똑 같은 직유법(直喩法)을 써서 말을 하지요. 그는 재가자의 쾌락을 얻지 못하였지만, [그렇다고 해서] 수행자가 된 목적을 완수하지도 못하고 있소.”
He has missed both a layman's pleasure
And his recluseship, too, the luckless man!
Running it, he throws it away
And perishes like a funerary brand.
Far better for him to swallow
A fiery hot iron ball
Than that immoral and uncontrolled
He should eat the country's alms.
그는 재가자[로서 누리는] 쾌락과
수행자다움 또한 버렸으니, 불운한 사람이네!
그것에 맞닥뜨려서 그것을 [쉽사리] 던져버리고
화장터에서 타다 남은 나무처럼 사라져가네.
저 계를 어기고 제어되지 않은 사람이
나라에서 나누어주는 것을 먹느니보다,
이글거리며 타는 뜨거운 쇠 공을
삼키는 편이 그에게는 훨씬 더 나으리.
