83. The Five Prognostic Signs
전조가 되는 다섯 가지 신호
This was said by the Lord....
“Bhikkhus, when a deva is due to pass away from a company
of devas, five prognostic signs appear: his flower-garlands wither,
his clothes become soiled, sweat is released from his armpits,
his bodily radiance fades, and the deva takes no delight in his
heavenly throne. The devas, observing the prognostic signs that
this deva is due to pass away, encourage him in three things
with the words: ‘Go from here, friend, to a good bourn. Having
gone to a good bourn, gain that which is good to gain. Having
gained that which is good to gain, become firmly established in it.'"
When this was said, a certain bhikkhu asked the Lord:
“Venerable sir, what is reckoned by the devas to be a good
bourn? What is reckoned by the devas to be a gain that is good
to gain? What is reckoned by the devas to be firmly established?"
“It is human existence, bhikkhus, that is reckoned by the devas
to be good bourn. When a human being acquires faith in the
Dhamma-and-Discipline taught by the Tathagata, this is reckoned
by the devas to be a gain that is good to gain. When faith is
steadfast in him, firmly rooted, established and strong, not to be
destroyed by any recluse or brahmin or deva or Mara or Brahma
or by anyone else in the world, this is reckoned by the devas
to be firmly established."
세존께서 이렇게 말씀하셨다고.... [나는 들었다].
“비구들이여! 한 신(神)이 [죽어서] 신들의 무리에서 떠나게 되었을 때 다섯 가지 전조가 되는 신호가 나타나지요. 즉, 꽃 장식[花冠]이 시들고 옷이 더러워지며 겨드랑이에서 땀이 흘러나오고 몸에서 나오는 빛[身光]이 희미해지며 스스로 천신(天神)의 자리에 아무런 기쁨을 갖지 않지요. [다른] 신들은 이 신이 [죽어] 떠나게 되었음을 알아채고서 이런 말들로 된 세 가지로 그를 격려하지요. 즉, ‘벗이여! 이곳에서 [떠나] 좋은 곳으로 가시오. 좋은 곳으로 가거든 이익이 되기 좋은 것을 얻으시오. 이익이 되기 좋은 것을 얻거든 그것에 확고하게 자리를 잡으시오.’”
이렇게 말씀하시자, 어떤 한 비구가 세존께 여쭈었다. “스승님이시여! 신들은 어떤 곳을 좋은 곳이라 여깁니까? 신들은 무엇을 이익이 되기 좋은 것을 얻는다고 여깁니까? 신들이 확고하게 자리를 잡는다고 여기는 것은 무엇입니까?”
“비구들이여! 신들이 좋은 곳이라고 여기는 곳은 인간계이지요. 여래가 가르쳐준 진리 법[法]과 계율[律]에 사람이 믿음을 갖게 된다면, 이것이 [바로] 신들이 ‘이익이 되기에 좋은 것을 얻는다’고 여기는 것이오. 그에게 믿음이 확고해지고 굳게 뿌리를 내리며 강해져서, 세상의 그 어떤 수행자나 바라문 혹은 신 또는 마라[惡魔] 아니면 브라흐마[梵]나 다른 누군가에 의해서도 깨지지 않는다면, 이것이 [바로] 신들이 ‘확고하게 자리를 잡았다’고 여기는 것이오.”
When a deva whose life is exhausted
Passes away from a deva-company,
The devas encourage him
In three ways with the words;
"Go, friend, to a good bourn,
To the fellowship of humans.
On becoming human acquire faith
Unsurpassed in the true Dhamma.
That faith made steadfast,
Become rooted and standing firm,
Will be unshakeable for life
In the true Dhamma well proclaimed.
Having abandoned misconduct by body,
Misconduct by speech as well,
Misconduct by mind, and whatever else
Is reckoned as a fault,
Having done much that is good
Both by body and by speech,
And done good with a mind
That is boundless and free from clinging,
With that merit as a basis
Made abundant by generosity,
You should establish other people
In the true Dhamma and the holy life."
When the devas know that a deva
Is about to pass from their midst,
Out of compassion they encourage him:
"Return here, deva, again and again."
신의 수명이 다하여
신들의 무리에서 떠날 때
신들이 이런 말들로 된 세 가지 방법으로
그를 격려하네.
“벗이여! 좋은 곳,
사람들과 함께 하는 곳으로 가시오.
사람이 되거든 진실한 진리 법에
비할 데 없는 신심을 가지시오.
확고해져서
뿌리를 내리고 흔들림이 없는 그 믿음은
훌륭하게 설해진 진실한 진리 법안에서
평생토록 흔들리지 않으리.
몸으로 짓는 악업, 말로 짓는 악업,
마음으로 짓는 악업
그리고 잘못이라고 여겨지는
다른 것들도 모두 버리고,
몸과 말로 모두
훌륭한 일을 많이 하고
마음으로 한 없이 좋은 일을 하여
집착에서 벗어났으니,
베풂[布施]으로 [더욱] 풍성해진
저 공덕을 기반으로 갖추고
그대는 진실한 진리 법과 성스러운 삶에
다른 사람들을 확고하게 자리잡게 해야 하네.”
한 신(神)이 자기들 무리를 떠나려 함을
신들이 알게 되면,
그들은 자애심으로 그를 격려하네:
“신이여! 거듭 거듭 돌아오시오.”
