48. A State of Misery
비참한 상태
This was said by the Lord....
"Bhikkhus, these two will go to a state of misery, to hell,
by not giving up such conduct as this. What two?
One who while no liver of the holy life pretends to be
one who lives the holy life, and one who falsely accuses
another who lives the holy life in complete purity of not living it.
These two will go to a state of misery, to hell, by not giving up
such conduct as this."
세존께서 이렇게 말씀하셨다고.... [나는 들었다].
“비구들이여! 이들 두 사람은 이것과 같은 행동을 버리지 않음으로
해서 비참한 상태, 지옥으로 갈 것이오. 두 사람은 어떤 사람일까요?
성스러운 삶을 사는 사람이 아니면서도 성스러운 삶을 살아가는 척
하는 사람, 그리고 완전히 청정하게 성스러운 삶을 사는 또 다른
사람을 성스러운 삶을 살지 않는다며 까닭 없이 비방하는 사람이지요.
이들 두 사람은 이것과 같은 행동을 버리지 않음으로 해서 비참한 상태,
지옥으로 갈 것이오.”
The false-accuser goes to hell
And also one who denies the deed he did;
Both these become equal hereafter,
Persons of base actions in the world beyond.
Many imposters wear the yellow robe
Though evil-natured and uncontrolled.
Because of their evil deeds,
Those evil ones are born in hell.
Far better for him to swallow
A fiery hot iron ball
Than that immoral and uncontrolled
He should eat the country's alms.
까닭 없이 비방하는 사람은 지옥으로 가고
자기가 한 일을 [하지 않았다고] 부정하는 사람도 그러하네.
이들 두 사람은 다음 생에 똑 같아지니,
저 세상에서도 저열한 행동을 하는 사람들이네.
성정(性情)이 악하고 자제하지 못하는데도
많은 사기꾼들이 누런 옷[僧服]을 입고 있지만,
그들이 저지른 악행 때문에
저 사악한 사람들은 지옥에 태어나네.
저 비도덕적[破戒者]이고 자제하지 못하는 그가
나라의 공양물을 받아먹느니
차라리 이글거리는 뜨거운 쇠공을
삼키는 것이 훨씬 나으리.
