40. Knowledge
지혜
This was said by the Lord....
"Ignorance, bhikkuhs, precedes and leads to unwholesome
states, and shamelessness and lack of fear of wrongdoing
follow after. Knowledge, bhikkuhs, precedes and leads to
wholesome states, and shame and fear of wrongdoing
follow after."
세존께서 이렇게 말씀하셨다고.... [나는 들었다].
“비구들이여! 어리석음[無明]은 불건전한 상태에 앞서고
그것으로 이끌어 가며 그 뒤를 따라 파렴치해지고 비행에
대해 두려워하지 않는 일이 생겨나지요.
비구들이여! 지혜[明]는 좋은 상태에 앞서고 그것으로
인도하며 그 뒤를 따라 부끄러움과 비행에 대한
두려움이 생겨나지요.”
Whatever bad bourns there are
In this world and hereafter,
All are rooted in ignorance,
Constructed by desire and greed.
Since one of evil desires
Is shameless and disrespectful,
From that evil flows forth
And he goes to a state of misery.
Thus by discarding desire and greed,
Along with ignorance as well,
A bhikkhu arouses knowledge
And abandons all bad bourns.
이 세상과 내세에
그 무슨 나쁜 곳이 있든지,
모두가 욕망과 탐욕에 의해 이루어진
어리석음[無明]에 뿌리를 두고 있네.
삿된 욕망을 가진 사람은
파렴치하고 [남을] 존경하지 않으므로,
그것에서 죄악이 생겨나고
그는 비참한 지경으로 나아가네.
그러므로 어리석음과 함께
욕망과 탐욕을 버림으로서
비구는 지혜를 환기시키고
모든 나쁜 곳을 떠나네.
