제 1장
한 가지에 대한 장(章)
1. Greed
탐욕
This was said by the Lord, said by the Arahant, so I heard:
“Abandon one thing,bhikkhus, and I guarantee you non-returning.
What is that one thing? Greed is that one thing, bhikkhus.
Abandon that and I guarantee you non-returning.”
This is the meaning of what the Lord said.
So in regard to this it was said:
이런 것을 세존께서 말씀하시고, 아라한께서 말씀하셨다고
나는 들었다.
“비구들이여! 한 가지를 버리시오. 그러면 내 그대들에게 ‘[이 세상에]
다시 돌아오지 않을 것[不還]’을 보증하오.
그 한 가지가 무엇일까요? 비구들이여! 탐욕[貪]이바로 그 한가지요.
그것을 버리면 내 그대들에게 [이 세상에] 다시 돌아오지
않을 것[不還]’을 보증하오.”
이것이 세존께서 말씀하신 것의 의미이다. 그래서 이에 관해
이렇게 말씀하셨다.

Beings coveting with greed
Go to rebirth in a bad bourn.
But having rightly understood greed,
Those with insight abandon it.
By abandoning it they never come
Back to this world again.
This too is the meaning of what was said by the Lord, so I heard.
탐욕을 갈망하는 중생들은
나쁜 경지에 다시 태어나게 되네.
그렇지만 탐욕[에 대해] 제대로 이해한
사람들은 지혜로 그것을 포기하네.
그것을 버림으로서 그들은 절대로
이 세상에 다시 돌아오지 않네.
이 또한 세존께서 말씀하신 것의 의미이라고 나는 들었다.
