Thus have I heard. At one time the Lord was staying near Savatthi in the Jeta Wood at Anathapindika¡¯s monastery. At that time the Venerable Sariputta, the Venerable Mahamoggallana, the Venerable Mahakassapa, the Venerable Mahakaccayana, the Venerable Mahakotthita, the Venerable Mahakappina, the Venerable Mahacunda, the Venerable Anuruddha, the Venerable Revata, and the Venerable Nanda were approaching the Lord. Seeing those venerable ones coming, the Lord said to the bhikkhus: ¡°Those are brahmins who are coming, bhikkhus, those are brahmins who are coming.¡± When this was said a certain bhikkhu, who was a brahmin by birth, asked the Lord: ¡°How, revered sir, is one a brahmin and what are the things that make one a brahmin?¡± Then, on realizing its significance, the Lord uttered on that occasion this inspired utterance
ÀÌ¿Í °°ÀÌ ³»°¡ µé¾ú´Ù. ÇѶ§ ¼¼Á¸²²¼ »ç¹åƼ[ÞìêÛàò] ±Ùó Á¬Å¸ ½£¿¡ ÀÖ´Â ¾Æ³ªÅ¸ÇɵðÄ«ÀÇ ¼öµµ¿ø[Ѷê®ïñÞì]¿¡ ¸Ó¹°°í °è¼Ì´Ù. ±× ¶§¿¡ »ç¸®Ç²Å¸ Àå·Î, ¸¶Çϸñ°¥¶ó³ª Àå·Î, ¸¶ÇÏÄ«»ñÆÄ Àå·Î, ¸¶ÇÏÄ«Â÷¾ß³ª Àå·Î, ¸¶ÇÏÄÚƼŸ Àå·Î, ¸¶ÇÏÄ«Çdzª Àå·Î, ¸¶ÇÏÃá´Ù Àå·Î, ¾Æ´©·í´Ù Àå·Î, ·¹¹ÙŸ Àå·Î¿Í ³´Ù Àå·Î°¡ ¼¼Á¸²² ´Ù°¡¿À°í ÀÖ¾ú´Ù. ±× Àå·ÎµéÀÌ ¿À´Â °ÍÀ» º¸½ÃÀÚ ¼¼Á¸²²¼´Â ºñ±¸µé¿¡°Ô ¸»¾¸Çϼ̴Ù. ¡°ºñ±¸µéÀÌ¿©! [Àú±â] ¿À°í ÀÖ´Â À̵éÀº ¹Ù¶ó¹®µéÀÌ¿ä, [Àú±â] ¿À°í ÀÖ´Â À̵éÀº ¹Ù¶ó¹®µéÀÌ¿ä.¡±
ÀÌ·¸°Ô ¸»¾¸ÇϽÃÀÚ, ¹Ù¶ó¹® °¡¹® Ãâ½ÅÀÇ ÇÑ ºñ±¸°¡ ¼¼Á¸²² ¿©ÂÞ¾ú´Ù. ¡°Á¸°æÇÏ¿É´Â ¾î¸£½ÅÀÌ¿©! [»ç¶÷ÀÌ] ¾î¶»°Ô ¹Ù¶ó¹®ÀÌ µÇ¸ç, ±×¸¦ ¹Ù¶ó¹®À¸·Î ¸¸µå´Â °Í[Ûö]µéÀº ¹«¾ùÀԴϱî?¡±¶ó°í ¸»Çß´Ù.
±× ¶§, ±×°ÍÀÇ Àǹ̡¤Á߿伺À» ±ú´ÞÀ¸½Ã°í¼ ¼¼Á¸²²¼´Â ¹Ù·Î ±× ¼ø°£ ¿µ°¨À» ÁÖ´Â ÀÌ·¯ÇÑ °Ô¼ÛÀ» À¼À¸¼Ì´Ù.
Those who have expelled evil states
And who fare ever mindful,
The awakened ones who have destroyed the fetters –
They are the brahmins in the world.

Ç×»ó ¸¶À½À» ì±â´Â »ç¶÷µé,
