109 The River Current
강물
This was said by the Lord·.
“Suppose, bhikkhus, a man was borne along by the current of a river that seemed pleasant and agreeable. But upon seeing him, a keen-sighted man standing on the bank would call out to him: ‘Hey, good man! Although you are being borne along by the current of a river that seems pleasant and agreeable, lower down there is a pool with
turbulent waves and swirling eddies, with monsters and demons. On reaching that pool you will die or suffer close to death.' Then, bhikkhus, upon hearing the words of that person, that man would struggle against the current with hands and feet.
I have made use of this simile, bhikkhus, to illustrate the meaning. And this is the meaning here: The current of the river is a synonym for craving. ‘Seeming pleasant and agreeable' is a synonym for the six internal sense-bases. ‘The pool lower down' is a synonym for the five lower fetters. ‘Turbulent waves' is a synonym for anger and frustration.
‘Swirling eddies' is a synonym for the five strands of sensual pleasure. ‘Monsters and demons' is a synonym for womenfolk. ‘Against the current' is a synonym for renunciation. ‘Struggling with hands and feet' is a synonym for instigating energy. ‘The keen-sighted man standing on the bank' is a synonym for the Tathagata, the Arahant, the Fully Enlightened One."
세존께서 이렇게 말씀하셨다고.... [나는 들었다].
“비구들이여! 어떤 사람이 호감이 가고 상쾌해 보이는 강 줄기를 따라서 떠내려가고 있다고 가정을 해 보시오. 그러나 강둑에 서있던 시력이 예리한 사람이라면 그를 보자마자, ‘어이, 착한 친구! 그대가 비록 호감이 가고 상쾌해 보이는 강줄기를 따라서 떠내려가고 있다고 하지만, 저 아래쪽에는 거센 파도와 소용돌이치는 여울이 있고 괴물과 악귀가 사는 호수가 있소. 그 호수에 도착하는 대로, 그대는 죽게 되거나 죽도록 [심하게] 고통을 겪을 것이오.’ 비구들이여! 그 사람이 하는 말을 듣고서 그 사람은 그 때서야
강물 흐름을 거슬러 [벗어나려고] 손과 발로 허우적거릴 것이오.
비구들이여! 나는 이런 비유를 써서 그 의미를 설명하였소.
그리고 이것이 [바로] 여기서 [쓰인] 의미요: ‘강 물줄기’는 갈망을 나타내는 것이오. ‘호감이 가고 상쾌해 보이는 것’은 내부의 여섯 가지 감각의 장[六內入處]을 나타내는 것이오. ‘저 아래 쪽에 있는 호수’는 다섯 가지의 더 낮은 속박[五下分結]을 나타내는 것이오. ‘거센 파도’는 화[분노]와 욕구불만을 나타내는 것이오. ‘소용돌이치는 여울’은 감각적 쾌락의 다섯 요소를 나타내는 것이오. ‘괴물과 악귀들’은 여자들을 나타내는 것이오. ‘흐름을 거스르는 것’은 출가[포기]을 나타내는 것이오. ‘손과 발로 허우적거리는 것’은 기력을 불러일으키는 것을 나타내는 것이오. ‘강둑에 서 있던 시력이 예리한 사람’은 아라한, 원만하게 깨달으신 분인 여래를 나타내는 것이오.”
Desiring future security from bondage
One should abandon sensual desire
However painful this may be.
Rightly comprehending with wisdom,
Possessing a mind that is well released,
One may reach freedom step by step.
One who is a master of knowledge,
Who has lived the holy life,
Is called one gone to the worlds end,
One who has reached the further shore.
미래에 속박에서 벗어나 안전을 바란다면
이것이 아무리 고통스럽더라도
감각적 욕망을 버려야 하네.
지혜를 가지고 올바르게 이해하고
[번뇌에서] 잘 벗어난 마음을 갖추었으니
한 단계, 한 단계 자유[涅槃]에 이를 수 있네.
성스러운 삶을 살아온 사람,
지혜를 통달한 사람은
피안에 도달해온 사람,
[미혹한] 세상의 끝에까지 간 사람이라 부르네.
