3.1 Former Action
전생의 업
Thus have I heard. At one time the Lord was staying near Savatthi in the Jeta Wood at Anathapindika’s monastery. On that occasion a certain bhikkhu was sitting cross-legged not far from the Lord, holding his body erect, mindful and clearly comprehending, enduring without complaint feelings that were painful, acute, sharp and severe, the ripening of former action.

Then, on realizing its significance, the Lord uttered on that occasion this inspired utterance:
이와 같이 내가 들었다. 한 때 세존께서 사밧티 근처 젯타 숲에 있는 아나타핀디카[給孤獨長者]의 수도원[祇園精舍]에 머물고 계셨다. 바로 그 때 어떤 한 비구가 세존에게서 멀지 않은 곳에서 가부좌를 하고 앉아서 몸을 꼿꼿이 세우고, 전생의 업이 익어서 생긴 고통스럽고 격렬하며 날카롭고 심각한 느낌을 불평 없이 참아내면서 마음을 챙기고 [실상을] 명확하게 파악하고 있었다.
세존께서 그 비구가 멀지 않은 곳에서 가부좌를 하고 앉아서 .... 전생의 업이 익어서 생긴 고통스럽고 격렬하며 날카롭고 심각한 느낌을 불평 없이 참아내면서 .... 하는 것을 보셨다.
그 때, 그것의 의미·중요성을 깨달으시고서 세존께서는 바로 그 순간 영감을 주는 이러한 게송을 읊으셨다.
A bhikkhu who has left behind all action,
Shaking off the dust of former deeds.
The stable one, unselfish, steady,
Has no need to address people.
전생에 지은 행위의 티끌을 떨쳐 버리고
온갖 업을 뒤에 남겨두고 떠난 비구.
이기심이 없고 흐트러짐이 없는 안정된 사람은
사람들과 이야기를 나눌 필요조차 없네.
