2.6 The Pregnant Woman
임신한 여인
Thus have I heard. At one time the Lord was staying near Savatthi in the Jeta Wood at Anathapindika's monastery. On that occasion the young wife of a certain wanderer said to the wanderer: “Go and fetch some oil, brahmin, I will use it at my delivery."
When this was said that wanderer replied to the woman wanderer: “But where can I get oil for you?"
And a second time and a third time that woman wanderer said to the wanderer: “Go and fetch some oil, brahmin, I will use it at my delivery."
At that time at the storehouse of King Pasenadi of Kosala there was being given to any recluse or brahmin as much as he wanted of ghee or oil to drink, but not to take away. Then that wanderer thought: “At the storehouse of King Pasenadi of Kosala there is being given to any recluse or brahmin as much as he wants of ghee or oil to drink, but not to take away. What if I went to the storehouse and drank as much oil as I wanted, and having returned home and vomited it up, should offer it to my wife for use at her delivery."
So that wanderer went to the storehouse of King Pasenadi of Kosala and having drunk as much oil as he wanted, he returned home, but was able neither to bring it up nor make it pass through him. Experiencing feelings that were acute, painful, sharp, and severe, he rolled about in agony.
Now the Lord, having put on his robe in the forenoon and taken his bowl and outer cloak, was going to Savatthi to collect almsfood. And the Lord saw that wanderer rolling about in agony.
Then, on realizing its significance, the Lord uttered on that occasion this inspired utterance:
이와 같이 내가 들었다. 한때 세존께서 사밧티[舍衛城] 근처 젯타 숲에 있는 아나타핀디카의 수도원[祇園精舍]에 머물고 계셨다. 그 때에 어떤 한 편력 수행자의 젊은 아내가 그 편력 수행자에게 “바라문이여! 가서 기름을 좀 가지고 오시구려. 출산할 때에 쓰려고 하오.”라고 말하였다.
이 말을 들은 편력 수행자는 여자 편력 수행자[자기 아내]에게 “하지만 당신이 쓸 기름을 어디에서 얻을 수 있지요?”라고 말했다.
그러자 그 여자 편력 수행자는 두 번, 세 번째 [거듭해서] 그 편력 수행자에게 “바라문이여! 가서 기름을 좀 가지고 오시구려. 출산할 때에 쓰려고 하오.”라고 말하였다.
그 때에 코살라의 파세나디 왕 소유의 창고에는 어떤 수행자 혹은 바라문에게든 그가 원하는 만큼의 버터 혹은 식용유를 주었지만, 가져가지 않은 [채 남아있는] 것이 있었다. 그러자 그 편력 수행자는 생각했다. “코살라의 파세나디 왕 소유의 창고에는 어떤 수행자 혹은 바라문에게든 그가 원하는 만큼의 버터 혹은 식용유를 주었지만, 가져가지 않은 [채 남아있는] 것이 있다. 내가 만약 그 창고로 가서 내가 원하는 만큼의 기름을 마시고 집으로 돌아와서 그것을 토해내, 아내가 출산에 쓸 수 있게 해준다면 어떨까?”
그렇게 해서 그 편력 수행자는 코살라의 파세나디 왕 소유의 창고로 가서 그가 원하는 만큼의 기름을 마시고 집으로 돌아왔지만, 토해낼 수도 또 배설해낼 수도 없었다. 심하고 고통스럽고 날카로우며 심각한 느낌을 겪으면서, 그는 몸부림치며 뒹굴렀다.
그 때 마침 오전 중에 옷을 입으신 세존께서는 발우와 겉옷을 지니시고 탁발을 하러 사밧티로 가고 계셨다. 그리고 그 편력 수행자가 몸부림치며 뒹굴고 있는 것을 세존께서 보셨다.
그 때, 그것의 의미·중요성을 깨달으시고서 세존께서는 바로 그 순간 영감을 주는 이러한 게송을 읊으셨다.
They are happy indeed who own nothing at all;
Those with highest knowledge own nothing at all.
See how people who own things are afflicted,
For people are strongly bound to people.
전혀 아무 것도 소유하지 않는 사람들이 진정 행복하네.
최고의 지혜를 갖춘 이들은 아무 것도 소유하지 않네.
사람은 사람에게 강하게 속박되어 있기 때문에
무엇인가를 소유한 사람들이 어떻게 괴로움을 당하는지 보시게.
