2.4 Respected
존경 받음
Thus have I heard. At one time the Lord was staying near Savatthi in the Jetta Wood at Anathapindika’s monastery. At that time the Lord was respected, revered, honoured, venerated, and given homage, and he obtained the requisites of robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicines. And the Order of bhikkhus was also respected.... But the wanderers of other sects were not respected, revered, honoured, venerated, and given homage, and they did not obtain the requisites of robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicines. Then those wanderers of other sects, unable to tolerate the respect shown to the Lord and the Order of bhikkhus, on seeing bhikkhus in the village and the forest, reviled, abused, provoked, and annoyed them with insults and harsh words.
Then a number of bhikkhus approached the Lord, prostrated themselves, and sat down to one side. Sitting there those bhikkhus said to the Lord: “At present, revered sir, the Lord is respected, ... and the Order of bhikkhus is also respected, ... but the wanderers of other sects are not respected.... And now, revered sir, those wanderers, unable to tolerate the respect shown towards the Lord ... on seeing bhikkhus ... provoke and annoy them with insults and harsh words."
Then, on realizing its significance, the Lord uttered on that occasion this inspired utterance:
이와 같이 내가 들었다. 한때 세존께서 사밧티[舍衛城] 근처 젯타 숲에 있는 아나타핀디카의 수도원[祇園精舍]에 머물고 계셨다. 그 때에 세존께서는 [사람들에게서] 존경을 받고 공경을 받고 경배를 받고 경의를 받았으며 또 옷·음식 공양·숙소와 약품과 같은 필수품을 얻고 있었다. 그리고 비구들의 승단 또한 존경을 받고,..... 그러나 다른 교파에 속한 편력 수행자들은 [사람들에게서] 존경을 받지 못하고 공경을 받지 못하였으며 경배를 받지 못하고 경의를 받지 못하였으며 또 옷·음식 공양·숙소와 약품과 같은 필수품을 얻지 못하였다. 그러자 세존과 비구들의 승단에 [사람들이] 보여드리는 존경을 견딜 수 없었던 다른 교파의 그 편력 수행자들은 마을과 숲에서 비구들을 보자마자, 욕설을 퍼붓고 모욕하고 화를 내게 만들고 무례한 짓과 거친 말로 그들을 괴롭혔다.
그러자 수많은 비구들이 세존께 다가와서 엎드려 [인사를 드리고] 한 쪽에 [떨어져] 앉았다. 그곳에 앉은 비구들이 세존께 “존자이시여! 현재는 세존께서 [사람들에게서] 존경을 받고,…. 그리고 비구들의 승단 또한 존경을 받고,.... 그러나 다른 교파에 속한 편력 수행자들은 [사람들에게서] 존경을 받지 못하고,.... 존자이시여! 그런데 지금 세존께 [사람들이] 보여드리는 존경....을 견딜 수 없는 그 편력 수행자들이 ... 비구들을 보자마자, .... 화를 내게 만들고 무례한 짓과 거친 말로 그들을 괴롭힙니다.”
그 때, 그것의 의미·중요성을 깨달으시고서 세존께서는 바로 그 순간 영감을 주는 이러한 게송을 읊으셨다.
When affected by pleasure and pain in the village and forest,
One should not ascribe them to oneself or another.
Contacts after one dependent on clinging.
How can contacts affect one without clinging?
마을과 숲에서 쾌락과 고통을 맛볼 때,
그것들을 자기 자신이나 또 다른 사람 탓으로 돌리면 안 되네.
[기쁨과 고통의] 촉감은 집착에 매달려 있는 사람에게 영향을 주는데,
집착이 없는 사람에게 어찌 촉감이 영향을 미칠 수 있으리?
