2.3 The Stick

Thus have I heard. At one time the Lord was staying near Savatthi in the Jetta Wood at Anathapindika¡¯s monastery. On that occasion, between Savatthi and Jeta Wood, a number of boys were hitting a snake with a stick. Now the Lord, having put on his robe in the forenoon and taken his bowl and outer cloak, was going to Savatthi to collect almsfood when he saw those boys between Savatthi and Jeta Wood hitting a snake with stick.
Then, on realizing its significance, the Lord uttered on that occasion this inspired utterance:
ÀÌ¿Í °°ÀÌ ³»°¡ µé¾ú´Ù. ÇѶ§ ¼¼Á¸²²¼ »ç¹åƼ[ÞìêÛàò] ±Ùó Á¬Å¸ ½£¿¡ ÀÖ´Â ¾Æ³ªÅ¸ÇɵðÄ«ÀÇ ¼öµµ¿ø[Ѷê®ïñÞì]¿¡ ¸Ó¹°°í °è¼Ì´Ù. ±×·±µ¥ ¹Ù·Î ±× ¶§, »ç¹åƼ¿Í Á¬Å¸ ½£ »çÀÌ¿¡¼ ¼ö¸¹Àº »ç³»¾ÆÀ̵éÀÌ ¸·´ë±â·Î ¹ìÀ» ¶§¸®°í ÀÖ¾ú´Ù. ±×·¯ÀÚ ¿ÀÀü Áß¿¡ ¿ÊÀ» ÀÔÀ¸½Å ¼¼Á¸²²¼ ¹ß¿ì¿Í °Ñ¿ÊÀ» Áö´Ï½Ã°í Ź¹ßÀ» ÇÏ·¯ »ç¹åƼ·Î °¡°í °è¼Ì´Âµ¥, ±× ¶§¿¡ »ç¹åƼ¿Í Á¬Å¸ ½£ »çÀÌ¿¡¼ ±× »ç³»¾ÆÀ̵éÀÌ ¸·´ë±â·Î ¹ìÀ» ¶§¸®°í ÀÖ´Â °ÍÀ» º¸¼Ì´Ù.
±× ¶§, ±×°ÍÀÇ Àǹ̡¤Á߿伺À» ±ú´ÞÀ¸½Ã°í¼ ¼¼Á¸²²¼´Â ¹Ù·Î ±× ¼ø°£ ¿µ°¨À» ÁÖ´Â ÀÌ·¯ÇÑ °Ô¼ÛÀ» À¼À¸¼Ì´Ù.
Who harms with a stick beings desiring happiness,
Though he himself seeks happiness,
He does not obtain it after death,
Who harms not with a stick beings desiring happiness,
While he himself seeks happiness,
He obtains it after death.
