5.2 Short-lived
단명(短命)
Thus have I heard. At one time the Lord was staying near Savatthi in the Jeta Wood at Anathapindika's monastery. Then the Venerable Ananda, emerging from seclusion in the evening, approached the Lord, prostrated himself, sat down to one side, and said: “It is wonderful, revered sir! It is marvellous, revered sir! How short-lived was the Lord's mother. Seven days after the Lord was born, the Lord's mother died and was reborn into the Tusita-group (of devas)."
“So it is, Ananda. Short-lived are the mothers of bodhisattas. Seven days after bodhisattas are born, their mothers die and are reborn into the Tusita-group (of devas).”
Then, on realizing its significance, the Lord uttered on that occasion this inspired utterance:
이와 같이 내가 들었다. 한 때 세존께서 사밧티 근처 젯타 숲에 있는 아나타핀디카[給孤獨長者]의 수도원[祇園精舍]에 머물고 계셨다. 그 때 [사람들과 떨어져] 홀로 [선정에 들었다가] 저녁에 일어난 아난다 장로가 세존께 다가가 무릎을 꿇어 [인사를 드리고] 한 쪽에 [떨어져] 앉아 말씀 드렸다. “스승님, 불가사의합니다! 스승님, 경탄할 만 합니다! 세존의 어머님께서는 왜 그리 단명하셨을까요? 세존께서 태어나신 지 7일 뒤에 세존의 어머님께서 돌아가시어 투시타 하늘[도솔천]에 사는 (신들의) 그룹에 다시 태어나셨습니다.”
“아난다여! 그것은 그렇소. 보디사타[菩薩]들의 어머님들은 단명하지요. 보디사타들이 태어난 지 7일 뒤, 그들 어머님들께서 돌아가시어 투시타 하늘[도솔천]에 사는 (신들의) 그룹에 다시 태어나지요.”
그 때, 그것의 의미·중요성을 깨달으시고서 세존께서는 바로 그 순간 영감을 주는 이러한 게송을 읊으셨다.
Whatever beings are born or will be born,
They will journey on leaving the body.
Knowing that all must be abandoned,
A skilful one, ardent, should lead the holy life.
어떤 존재로 태어나던 아니면 태어나게 되든,
그들은 육체를 버리고 여행을 떠나게 되리.
모든 것을 다 포기해야 한다는 것을 아는
정진하고, 숙련된 사람은 성스러운 삶을 영위해야 하리.
