4.6 Pindola
핀도라
Thus have I heard. At one time the Lord was staying near Savatthi in the Jeta Wood at Anathapindika's monastery. On that occasion the Venerable Pindola Bharadvaja was sitting cross-legged not from the Lord, holding his body erect ― a forest-dweller, an almsfood-collector, a rag-robe-wearer, a three-robe-wearer, one of few wishes, contented, secluded, solitary, energetic, an ascetic, devoted to the higher mind.
The Lord saw the Venerable Pindola Bharadvaja sitting cross-legged not far away ... devoted to the higher mind.
Then, on realizing it significance, the Lord uttered on that occasion this inspired utterance:
이와 같이 내가 들었다. 한 때 세존께서 사밧티 근처 젯타 숲에 있는 아나타핀디카[給孤獨長者]의 수도원[祇園精舍]에 머물고 계셨다. 그 때 핀도라 브하라드바자 장로가 세존으로부터 멀지 않은 곳에서 가부좌를 하고 앉아 몸을 곧추 세우고, 숲 속에 사는 사람· 탁발 걸식자·걸레 조각으로 만든 옷을 입은 사람·삼의(三衣)만 입은 사람· 바라는 것이 거의 없는 사람이 만족하고 인적이 드문 곳에서 홀로 떨어져 지내고 정진하는 사람·고행자가 되어 ‘좀 더 높은 마음’에 전념하고 있었다.
세존께서 핀도라 브라하드바자 장로가 멀지 않은 곳에서 가부좌를 하고 앉아 몸을 곧추 세우고.... ‘좀 더 높은 마음’에 전념하고 있는 것을 보셨다.
그 때, 그것의 의미·중요성을 깨달으시고서 세존께서는 바로 그 순간 영감을 주는 이러한 게송을 읊으셨다.
Not insulting, not injuring,
Restraint by the Patimokkha,
Moderation in eating,
Lodging in a secluded place,
Being intent on the higher mind –
This is the instruction of the awakened ones.
[다른 사람들을] 비방하지도 해를 끼치지도 않고
파티목카에 의해 [스스로] 삼가고
먹는 것을 절제하며
외딴 곳에서 머물고
‘좀 더 높은 마음’에 전념하는 것 –
이것이 깨달으신 분[覺者]들의 가르침이네.
