4.5 The Bull Elephant
수 코끼리
Thus have I heard. At one time the Lord was staying near Kosambi at the Ghosita monastery. At that time the Lord was living hemmed in by bhikkhus and bhikkhunis, by male and female lay followers, by kings and royal ministers, by sectarian teachers and their disciples, and he lived in discomfort and not at ease. Then the Lord thought: “At present I am living hemmed in by bhikkhus and bhikkhunis ... by sectarian teachers and their disciples, and I live in discomfort and not at ease. Suppose I were to live alone, secluded from the crowd?"
Then the Lord, having put on his robe in the forenoon and taken his bowl and outer cloak, entered Kosambi for almsfood. Having walked for almsfood in Kosambi and returned after the meal, he set his lodging in order by himself, took his bowl and cloak, and without informing his attendant or taking leave of the Order of bhikkhus, he set off alone, without a companion, for Parileyyaka. Walking on tour by stages, he arrived at Parileyyaka and stayed near Parileyyaka in a protected forest at the foot of an auspicious sal-tree.
이와 같이 내가 들었다. 한 때 세존께서 코삼비 근처 고시타 수도원에 머물고 계셨다. 그 때 세존께서는 비구와 비구니, 청신사와 청신녀, 왕과 대신들, 외도의 스승들과 그 제자들에게 둘러싸여 살고 계셨는데, 그 분께서는 불쾌하고 편안치 못하게 지내셨다. 그러자 세존께서는 “지금 나는 비구와 비구니, ..... 외도의 스승들과 그 제자들에게 둘러싸여 살고 있고, 불쾌하고 편안치 못하게 지낸다. 무리에서 떨어져 나 홀로 살아가면 어떨까?”라고 생각하셨다.
이윽고 세존께서는 오전 중에 옷을 입으시고 발우와 겉옷[架裟]을 지니시고 탁발을 하러 코삼비로 들어가셨다. 코삼비에서 탁발을 하러 걸어 다니시고 공양을 마친 뒤 돌아오신 그 분께서는 손수 숙소를 정리하시고, 발우와 겉옷을 지니시고서 시자에게 알리거나 비구들의 승단에게 작별인사도 하지 않으시고는 길동무도 없이 팔리레야카를 향해 혼자 길을 떠나셨다. 그 분께서는 쉬엄쉬엄 걸어서 유행하시어 팔리레야카에 도착하여 팔리레야카 근처의 보호림 안에 있는 한 그루 상서로운 사라나무 밑에 머무셨다.
Now a certain bull elephant was living hemmed in by elephants and she-elephants, by elephant calves and sucklings; he ate grass with the tips pulled off and they ate the branches he had broken down. He drank muddied water and on going down and coming out of the water he was jostled by she-elephants; and he lived in discomfort and not at ease. Then that bull elephant thought: “At present I am living hemmed in by elephants and she-elephants, by elephant calves and sucklings; I ate grass with the tips pulled off and they eat the branches which I break down. I drink muddied water and on going down and coming out of the water I am jostled by she-elephants; and I live in discomfort and not at ease. Suppose I were to live alone, secluded from the crowd?"
So that bull elephant left the herd and went to Parileyyaka, to the protected forest, and approached the Lord at the foot of the auspicious sal-tree. On reaching the place where the Lord was staying that bull elephant kept the place free of grass and brought water with his trunk for the Lord's use.
그 때 어떤 한 수코끼리가 수코끼리와 암 코끼리, 어린 코끼리와 젓먹이 코끼리들에 둘러싸여 살아가고 있었다. 그 수코끼리는 끝이 뭉개진 풀을 먹었고 다른 코끼리들은 그[수코끼리]가 꺾어놓은 가지를 먹었으며, 그는 흙탕물을 마셨고. 물에서 나오면 암 코끼리들에게 [이리저리] 밀려 다녔으며 그리고 불쾌하고 편안치 못하게 지냈다. 그러자 그 수코끼리는 “지금 나는 수코끼리와 암 코끼리, 어린 코끼리와 젓먹이 코끼리들에 둘러싸여 살아가고 있다. 나는 끝이 뭉개진 풀을 먹고 다른 코끼리들은 내가 꺾어놓은 가지를 먹으며, 나는 흙탕물을 마시고 또 물에서 들락거릴 때면 암 코끼리들에게 [이리저리] 밀려다니며 그리고 불쾌하고 편안치 못하게 지내고 있다. 무리에서 떨어져 나 홀로 살아가면 어떨까?”라고 생각하였다
그리하여 그 수 코끼리는 무리를 떠나 팔리레야카의 보호림으로 가서 상서로운 사라나무 아래[에 계시는] 세존께 다가갔다. 세존께서 머물고 계시던 곳에 도착하자, 그 수 코끼리는 그곳에서 잡초를 뽑아 버리고 또 세존께서 사용하실 물을 코로 날라왔다.
Then, while the Lord was in solitude and seclusion, this thought arouse in his mind: “Formerly I was living hemmed in by bhikkhus and bhikkhunis ... and I was living in discomfort and not at ease. But now I live not hemmed in by bhikkhus and bhikkhunis ... in comfort and at ease." And also this thought arose in that bull elephant's mind: ”Formerly I was living hemmed in by elephants and she-elephants ... and I was living in discomfort and not at ease, but now I live not hemmed in by elephants and she-elephants ... I eat unbroken grass and (others) do not eat the branches which I break down. I drink clear water and on going down and coming out of the water I am not jostled by she-elephants, and I live in comfort and at ease."
Then the Lord, on observing his own solitude, understood with his mind the thought in the mind of that bull elephant, and uttered on that occasion this inspired utterance:
그 때, 세존께서 [대중들과] 떨어져 홀로 계시던 동안에 이런 생각이 그 분 마음에 일어났다. “예전에 나는 비구와 비구니들, ..... 에게 둘러싸여 살고 있었고, 불쾌하고 편안치 못하게 지냈었다. 그러나 지금은 비구와 비구니들, .....에게 둘러싸이지 않은 채 살고 있고, 유쾌하고 편안하게 지낸다.” 그리고 그 수코끼리의 마음에도 이런 생각이 일어났다. “예전에 나는 수코끼리와 암 코끼리들, ....에게 둘러싸여 살고 있었고, 불쾌하고 편안치 못하게 지냈었다. 그러나 지금은 수코끼리와 암 코끼리들, .....에게 둘러싸이지 않은 채 살고 있고, .... 그런데 지금은 끝이 뭉개지지 않은 풀을 먹고 (다른 코끼리들은) 내가 꺾어놓는 가지를 먹지 않는다. 나는 깨끗한 물을 마시고 또 물에서 들락거릴 때에도 암 코끼리들에게 [이리저리] 밀려다니지 않으며 유쾌하고 편안하게 지낸다.”
그 때 세존께서는, 당신께서 홀로 머무셨던 것[의 의미·중요성]을 살펴보시고는 당신 마음으로 그 수코끼리의 생각을 이해하셨고 바로 그 순간 영감을 주는 이러한 게송을 읊으셨다.
This unites mind with mind,
The perfected one and the bull elephant
With tusk as long as chariot-poles:
That each delights in being alone in the forest.
이것이 마음과 마음을 이어주니,
완성에 이른 사람[正遍知]과
수레 끌대처럼 긴 이빨을 가진 수 코끼리,
각기 숲속에서 홀로 머무는 것을 즐기네.
