4.4 The Moonlight Night
달밤
Thus have I heard. At one time the Lord was staying near Rajagaha in the Bamboo Wood at the Squirrels’ Feeding Place. On that occasion the Venerable Sariputta and the Venerable Mahamoggallana were staying in the Pigeon's Glen. It happened that the Venerable Sariputta, on a moonlight night, was seated in the open air with his head newly shaved and had attained a certain (stage of) concentration.
At that moment two yakkhas who were companions were going from north to south on some business or other when they saw the Venerable Sariputta, on the moonlight night, seated in the open air with his head newly shaved. On seeing him one yakkha said to the other: “The idea has occurred to me, friend, to give this recluse a blow on the head."
When he said this the other yakkha said: “Take care, friend! Do not strike the recluse! He is a mighty recluse, friend, of great supernormal potency and power."
A second time and a third the first yakkha said to the othr: “The idea has occurred to me, friend, to give this recluse a blow on the head."
And a second time and a third time the other yakkha said: “Take care, friend! Do not strike the recluse! He is a mighty recluse, friend, of great supernormal potency and power.”
이와 같이 내가 들었다. 한 때 세존께서 라자가하 근처 대나무 숲[竹林]에 있는 다람쥐 사육장에 머물고 계셨다. 그 때 사리풋타 장로와 마하목갈라나 장로가 비둘기 골짜기에 머물고 있었다. 달밤에 사리풋타 장로는 새로 삭발을 하고 [정사] 밖에 앉아서 어떤 정신 집중[三昧] (단계)에 들었었다.
그 순간 친구 사이인 야차 둘이서 이런 저런 용무로 북쪽에서 남쪽으로 가고 있었는데, 달빛이 밝은 밤에 새로 삭발을 하고 [정사] 밖에 앉아 있는 사리풋타 장로를 보았다. 그를 보자 한 야차가 다른 야차에게 “벗이여! 이 수행자 머리를 한 대 갈겨주고 싶은 생각이 일어났네.”라고 말하였다.
그가 이렇게 말했을 때, 다른 야차는 “벗이여, 조심하시게! 수행자를 때리지 마시게! 벗이여! 그는 대단한 신통력을 지닌 훌륭한 수행자일세.”라고 말했다.
[그러나] 첫 번째 야차는 다른 야차에게 “벗이여! 이 수행자 머리를 한 대 갈겨주고 싶은 생각이 일어났네.”라고 말하였다.
다른 야차가 재차, 삼차 “벗이여, 조심하시게! 수행자를 때리지 마시게! 벗이여! 그는 대단한 신통력을 지닌 훌륭한 수행자일세.”라고 말했다.
Then the first yakkha, not heeding (the warning of) the other yakkha, gave the Venerable Sariputta a blow on the head. And so great was the blow that it might have felled an elephant seven or seven-and-a-half cubits high, or split a great mountain peak. Thereupon that yakkha, crying out, “I am burning! I am burning!" instantly fell into the great hell. The Venerable Mahamoggallana, with divine vision purified and surpassing that of humans, saw that yakkha giving the Venerable Sariputta a blow on the head. On seeing this he approached the Venerable Sariputta and said: “Are you well, friend? Are you bearing up? Have you any pain?”
“I am well, friend Moggallana. I am bearing up, friend Moggallana, although I do have a slight headache.”
그런데도 첫 번째 야차가 다른 야차(의 경고)에 주의하지 않고 사리풋타의 머리를 한 대 때렸다. 주먹질이 하도 강해서 코끼리를 7 ~ 7.5 큐빗[腕尺: 고대의 척도; 가운데 손가락 끝에서 팔꿈치까지의 길이로 보통 43-53cm.] 정도 깊이로 쓰러뜨리거나 거대한 산 정상을 산산조각 낼 정도였다. [그런데] 그 순간 그 야차가 “내가 불에 타고 있네! 내가 불에 타고 있네!”라고 악을 쓰면서 계속 대지옥으로 떨어졌다. 마하목갈라나 장로는 청정하고 [보통] 사람들을 뛰어넘는 천안天眼으로 그 야차가 사리풋타 장로 머리를 한 대 때리는 것을 보았다. 이것을 본 그가 사리풋타 장로에게 다가가 “벗이여, 괜찮으세요? 참을 만 하세요? 아픈 데는 없으세요?”라고 말했다.
“벗 목갈라나여! 저는 괜찮습니다. 벗 목갈라나여! 두통이 조금 있기는 하지만 저는 참을만 합니다.”
“It is wonderful, friend Sariputta! It is marvellous, friend Sariputta! How great is the supernormal potency and power of the Venerable Sariputta! Just now, friend Sariputta, a certain yakkha gave you a blow on the head. And so great was the blow it might have felled an elephant seven or seven-and-a-half cubits high or split a great mountain peak. And yet the Venerable Sariputta just says, ‘I am well, friend Moggallana. I am bearing up, friend Moggallana, although I do have a slight headache.'"
“It is wonderful, friend Moggallana! It is marvellous, friend Moggallana! How great is the supernormal potency and power of the Venerable Mahamoggallana in that he can actually see a yakkha. Now we could not even see a mud sprite.”
The Lord, with divine hearing purified and surpassing that of humans, heard this conversation of these two great perfected ones.
Then, on realizing its significance, the Lord uttered on that occasion this inspired utterance:
“벗 사리풋타여, 불가사의합니다! 벗 사리풋타여, 경탄할만 합니다! 사리풋타 장로의 신통력이 그렇게 대단하다니요! 사리풋타여! 지금 막 어떤 야차가 그대 머리를 한 대 때렸습니다. 그리고 그 주먹질은 하도 강해서 코끼리를 7 ~ 7.5 큐빗 정도 깊이로 쓰러뜨리거나 거대한 산 정상을 산산조각 낼 정도였습니다. 그런데도 사리풋타 장로는 ‘벗 목갈라나여! 저는 괜찮습니다. 벗 목갈라나여! 두통이 조금 있기는 하지만 저는 참을 만 합니다.’라고 하십니다.”
“벗 목갈라나여, 불가사의합니다! 벗 목갈라나여, 경탄할 만 합니다! 야차를 실제로 볼 수 있다니, 마하목갈라나 장로의 신통력이 그렇게 대단하군요! 지금 우리는 진흙 귀신[泥鬼]조차도 볼 수 없는데요.”
세존께서는 청정하고 [보통] 사람들을 뛰어넘는 천이天耳로 이들 두 위대한 완성자들이 나누는 이 대화를 들으셨다.
그 때, 그것의 의미·중요성을 깨달으시고서 세존께서는 바로 그 순간 영감을 주는 이러한 게송을 읊으셨다.
Whose mind stands like a mountain,
Steady, it is not perturbed,
Unattached to things that arouse attachment,
Unangered by things that provoke anger.
When his mind is cultivated thus
How can suffering come to him?
마음이 산처럼 굳건하게 서 있는 사람은
집착을 일으키는 것들에 집착하지 않고
화를 내게 하는 것들 때문에 화를 내지도 않으니,
흔들리지 않네.
마음을 이렇게 갈고 닦았을 때,
그에게 어찌 괴로움이 닥칠 수 있겠는가?
