4.2 The Turbulent Ones
난폭한 사람들
Thus have I heard. At one time the Lord was staying near Kusinara at Upavattana in the sal-tree grove of the Mallas.
On that occasion a number of bhikkhus were living in forest huts not far from the Lord, and they were turbulent, arrogant, frivolous, garrulous, of loose talk, unmindful, uncomprehending, unconcentrated, with wandering minds and uncontrolled faculties.
The Lord saw those bhikkhus living nearby in forest huts ... with wandering minds and uncontrolled faculties.
Then, on realizing its significance, the Lord uttered on that occasion this inspired utterance:
이와 같이 내가 들었다. 한 때 세존께서 쿠시나라 근처 말라족 소유의 사라나무 동산에 있는 우파바타나에 머물고 계셨다.
그 때 수많은 비구들이 세존에게서 멀지 않은 숲 속 오두막에서 살고 있었는데, 그들은 난폭하고, 무례하며, 경망스럽고, 수다스러우며, 말에 절제가 없고, 마음을 챙기지 못하고, [진실을] 파악하지 못하며, [마음을] 집중하지 못하고, 마음은 [이리저리] 갈피를 못 잡고 감관(感官)을 제어하지 못하고 있었다.
세존께서는 [당신] 가까이 숲속 오두막에서 ... 마음은 [이리저리] 갈피를 못 잡고 감관을 제어하지 못하고 살고 있는 그 비구들을 보셨다.
그 때, 그것의 의미·중요성을 깨달으시고서 세존께서는 바로 그 순간 영감을 주는 이러한 게송을 읊으셨다.
With an unguarded body
And encumbered by wrong view,
Overcome by lethargy and torpor,
One goes along in the power of Mara.
So one should be guarded in mind,
One should make right thought one's domain.
When he has put right view to the forefront
And understood rise and fall,
A bhikkhu who overcomes lethargy and torpor
Will forsake all bad destination.
몸을 제대로 지켜내지 못하고
삿된 견해에 가로 막혀
무기력과 무감각 마비상태에 굴복된
사람은 마라[악마]의 힘에 끌려가네.
그러니 마음을 [제대로] 지켜내야 하고
올바른 생각을 해야 하네
무기력과 무감각 마비상태를 극복하는 비구가.
올바른 견해를 중심에 두고
생멸[의 진리]를 이해했을 때,
그는 모든 나쁜 운명[惡趣]을 떠나게 되리.
