3.9 A Craft
기술
Thus have I heard. At one time the Lord was staying near Savatthi in the Jeta Wood at Anathapindika's monastery. On that occasion ... a number of bhikkhus had gathered together in the kareri-tree pavilion when this topic of conversation arose: “Who, friend, knows a craft? Who is trained in what craft? Which craft is the chief of crafts?" Herein, some said, “Elephant-craft is the chief of crafts"; some said, “Horsemanship is the chief of crafts"; some said, “Chariot-craft ... Archery ... Swordsmanship ... Communicating by gestures ... Accountancy ... Mathematics ... The art of writing ... The art of poetry ... The art of debate ... Political science is the chief of crafts.” And this conversation of those bhikkhus continued without coming to an end.
이와 같이 내가 들었다. 한 때 세존께서 사밧티 근처 젯타 숲에 있는 아나타핀디카[給孤獨長者]의 수도원[祇園精舍]에 머물고 계셨다. 그 때 .... 수많은 비구들이 카레리 나무[로 만든] 가설 건물에 함께 모여있을 때 이런 주제의 대화가 일어났다. “벗이여! 누가 기술을 [잘] 알까요? 누가 어떤 기술을 익혔을까요? 기술 중에서 어떤 기술이 으뜸일까요?” 그 자리에서 몇몇이 “코끼리 조련이 기술 중에서 으뜸이지요.”라고 말했고, 일부는 “말 조련이 기술 중에서 으뜸이지요”라고 말했으며 몇몇은 “마차를 모는 기술이.... 활 쏘는 기술이.... 검술이.... 몸짓으로 의사소통하기가.... 회계 기술이.... 산수가.... 서예(書藝)가.... 작시(作詩)가.... 논쟁술이... 정치학이 기술 중에서 으뜸이지요.”말했다. 그리고 그 비구들이 나누는 이런 대화가 끝나지 않고 계속되었다.
Then the Lord, emerging from seclusion in the evening went to the kareri-tree pavilion... “Its is not right, bhikkhus, that you should talk on such a topic. When you have gathered together, bhikkhus, you should do one of two things: either engage in talk on Dhamma or maintain noble silence."
Then, on realizing its significance, the Lord uttered on that occasion this inspired utterance:
그 때, 저녁 무렵 홀로 [선정에 드셨다가] 일어나신 세존께서 카레리 나무[로 만든] 가설 건물로 가셔서..... “비구들이여! 그대들이 그와 같은 주제로 이야기를 하는 것은 옳지 않소. 비구들이여! 그대들이 함께 모였을 때에는, 두 가지 중 하나, 진리 법에 관한 이야기[法談]를 하든가 고귀한 침묵을 지키든가 하여야 하오.”
그 때, 그것의 의미·중요성을 깨달으시고서 세존께서는 바로 그 순간 영감을 주는 이러한 게송을 읊으셨다.
Who lives by no craft, unburdened, desiring the goal,
With restrained faculties, wholly released,
Wandering homeless, unselfish, desireless,
Conceit abandoned, solitary --- he is a bhikkhu.
집을 떠나고 아집이 없으며 욕망이 없이,
자만심을 버리고 홀로 만행하면서
감각 기관을 제어하고 모든 것을 놓아 버렸으며
아무 기술에 의존하지 않고 [다른 것에 대한] 짐도 지지 않으며
[해탈이라는] 목표만을 바라며 살아가는 사람,
그가 [바로] 비구이네.
