장님으로 태어남
6.1 Relinquishing the Life-force
생명력을 포기함
Thus have I heard. At one time the Lord was staying near Vesali in the Great Wood in the Hall of the Gabled House. Then in the forenoon, the Lord, having put on his robe and taken his bowl and outer cloak, entered Vesali for almsfood. Having walked in Vesali for almsfood and returned after the meal, he addressed the Venerable Ananda: “Take a mat, Ananda. I will go to the Capala Shrine for the midday period."
“Very well, revered sir," the Venerable Ananda replied, and taking a mat he followed close behind the Lord.
이와 같이 내가 들었다. 한 때 세존께서 베살리 근처 큰 숲[大林]에 있는 박공으로 된 집의 강당에 머물고 계셨다. 그 때 세존께서는 오전 중에 옷을 입으시고 당신 발우와 겉옷을 지니시고 탁발을 하러 베살리로 들어가셨다. 탁발을 하러 베살리에서 걸어 다니시고 공양을 마친 뒤 돌아오신 그 분께서 아난다 장로에게 “아난다여! 깔개를 챙기시오. 한 낮 동안에 차팔라 사당에 가려고 하오.”라고 말씀하셨다.
아난다 장로가 “스승님, 잘 알겠습니다.”라고 대답을 드리고, 깔개를 들고서 세존의 바로 뒤를 따라갔다.
Then the Lord approached the Capala Shrine and on reaching it sat down on a prepared seat. Sitting there the Lord addressed the Venerable Ananda: “Pleasant, Ananda, is Vesali. Pleasant is the Udena Shrine, the Gotamaka Shrine, the Sattamba Shrine, the Bahuputta Shrine, the Sarandada Shrine, and the Capala Shrine. When anyone, Ananda, has developed and cultivated the four bases of successful accomplishment, made them the vehicle, made them the basis, established, consolidated, and properly practised them, he could if he so wishes live out the aeon or what remains of the aeon. The Tathagata, Ananda, has developed and cultivated the four bases of successful accomplishment ... and properly practised them, and if he so wishes, the Tathagata could live out the aeon or what remains of the aeon.”
그 때 세존께서는 차팔라 사당으로 다가가셨고 그곳에 도착하시자 준비된 자리에 앉으셨다. 그곳에 앉으신 세존께서 아난다 장로에게 말씀하셨다. “아난다여! 베살리는 호감이 가는 [곳]이오. 우데나 사당, 고타마카 사당, 사탐바 사당, 바흐풋타 사당, 사란다다 사당과 차팔라 사당은 호감이 가는 [곳]이오. 아난다여! 누구든지 네 가지 신통력을 닦고 수행하며, 그것들을 수단으로 삼고 기초로 삼으며 그것들을 확립하고 강화하며 적절하게 실천할 때, 만약 그가 그렇게 바란다면, 세계의 한 주기[劫]를 통과하도록 아니면 그것의 남은 기간까지 [이 세상에서] 살 수 있지요. 아난다여! 여래는 네 가지 신통력을 닦고 수행하여 왔으며 .... 그것들을 적절하게 실천하여 왔으니, 여래는, 그가 원하기만 한다면, 세계의 한 주기를 통과하도록 혹은 그것의 남은 기간까지 살 수도 있소.”
But even though such a broad hint was made by the Lord, such an evident indication, the Venerable Ananda was unable to comprehend it. And he did not entreat the Lord (by saying): “Revered sir, let the Lord live out the aeon, let the Sugata live out the aeon, for the welfare of the many, for the happiness of the many, out of compassion for the world, for the good, welfare, and happiness of devas and men," as his mind was possessed by Mara.
A second time and a third time the Lord addressed the Venerable Ananda, saying: “Pleasant, Ananda, is Vesali.... The Tathagata could live out the aeon or what remains of the aeon."
But a second and a third time the Venerable Ananda was unable to comprehend it ... as his mind was possessed by Mara.
Then the Lord addressed the Venerable Ananda: “Go, Ananda. Do now what you think it is time to do."
“Very well, revered sir," the Venerable Ananda replied, and rising from his seat, he prostrated himself before the Lord, and keeping his right side towards him, he went and sat down at the foot of a certain tree not far away.
그러나 세존께서 해 주신 그렇게도 분명한 힌트, 그렇게 뚜렷한 암시에도 불구하고 아난다 장로는 그것[암시의 내용]을 알아챌 수 없었다. 그리고 그는 마치 그의 마음이 마라[악마]에게 홀려 있었으므로, “스승님! 행복하신 분께서는 많은 사람들의 복리와 행복을 위해, 세상에 대한 자애심으로, 신들과 인간의 이익과 안녕을 위하여 세계의 한 주기를 통과하도록 머물러 주소서!”라고 (말씀을 드리며) 간청 드리지도 않았다.
두 번 그리고 세 번째로 세존께서 아난다 장로에게 “아난다여! 베살리는 호감이 가는 [곳]이오...... 여래는 세계의 한 주기를 통과하도록 혹은 그것의 남은 기간까지 살 수도 있소.”라고 말씀하셨다.
그러나 두 번 그리고 세 번째[말씀에도] 아난다 장로는 그의 마음이 마라[악마]에게 홀려 있었으므로 ... 그것을 알아챌 수 없었다. 그러자 세존께서 아난다 장로에게 “아난다여! 가시오. 이제 그대에게 맞는다고 생각하는 대로 하시오.”라고 말씀하셨다.
아난다 장로는 “스승님, 잘 알겠습니다.”라고 대답을 드리고 자기 자리에서 일어나 세존 앞에 무릎을 꿇어 [인사를 드리고] 그 분을 향해 오른 쪽으로 돌아서 [그곳을 떠나서] 멀지 않은 곳에 있는 나무 아래로 가서 앉았다.
Then, not long after the departure of the Venerable Ananda, Mara the Evil One approached the Lord. Standing to one side, Mara the Evil One said to the Lord: “Let the Lord, revered sir, now attain the final Nibbana, let the Sugata attain final Nibbana. It is now time, revered sir, for the Lord's final Nibbana. These words, revered sir, were spoken by the Lord: ‘I will not attain final Nibbana, Evil One, until my bhikkhu disciples are wise, disciplined, confident, attained to security from bondage, learned, experts in Dhamma, practising according to Dhamma, practising the proper way, living by following Dhamma; nor until, after learning (it) from their own teachers, they will (be able to) announce, teach, declare, establish, reveal, expound, and explain (it to others); nor until, refuting with Dhamma the arisen theories of others (outsiders), they will (be able to) teach Dhamma that is convincing .' But now, revered sir, the Lord's bhikkhu disciples are wise ... and (are able to) teach Dhamma that is convincing. Let the Lord, revered sir, now attain final Nibbana, let the Sugata attain final Nibbana. It is now time, revered sir, for the Lord’s final Nibbana.
아난다 장로가 떠나고 얼마 되지 않아 사악한 놈인 마라[악마]가 세존께 다가왔다. 그리고 한 쪽에 [떨어져] 서서 사악한 놈인 마라[악마]가 세존께 말씀 드렸다. “스승님! 이제 세존께서는 마지막 닙바나를 성취하시옵소서. 행복하신 분께서는 마지막 닙바나를 성취하시옵소서. 스승님! 이제 세존께서 마지막 닙바나[般涅般]에 드실 때가 되었습니다. 스승님! 세존께서는 제게 이런 말을 하셨습니다. ‘사악한 놈이여! 나의 비구 제자들이 진실한 제자가 되어 현명하고 규율이 바르며 확신이 서고 속박에서 벗어나 안전해지며 이해력을 갖추고 진리 법에 있어 조예가 깊어지며 진리 법에 따라 실천 수행하고 적절한 행위 [준칙]을 지키면서 진리 법을 따라 살아가고, 또한 그들 자신의 스승들의 말씀을 배우고 나서 그것을 설명하고 설법하고 공공연히 드러내 말하고 확고히 자리를 잡게 하고 [다른 사람들에게] 계시해주고 상세하게 설명하며 분명하게 할 수 있을 때까지는, 다른 사람들의 (적대적인) 견해가 일어나면 진리 법으로 논파하며, 이 믿을 수 있는 진리 법을 설법할 (수 있을) 때까지는 내 마지막 닙바나를 성취하지 않을 것이다’고. 스승님! 그렇지만 이제 세존의 비구 제자들은 현명하고 .... 믿을 수 있는 진리 법을 설법할 (수 있)습니다. 스승님! 이제 세존께서는 마지막 닙바나를 성취하시옵소서. 행복하신 분께서는 마지막 닙바나를 성취하시옵소서. 스승님! 이제 세존께서 마지막 닙바나[般涅般]에 드실 때가 되었습니다.
These words, revered sir, were spoken by the Lord: ‘I will not attain final Nibbana, Evil One, until my bhikkhuni disciples are wise ... and (are able to) teach Dhamma that is convincing. I will not attain final Nibbana until the men lay followers ... the women lay followers who are my disciples are wise ... and (are able to) teach Dhamma that is convincing.' But now, revered sir, the Lord's bhikkhuni disciples ... the men and women lay followers who are Lord's disciples are wise ... and (are able to) teach Dhamma that is convincing. Let the Lord now attain final Nibbana, let the Sugata attain final Nibbana. It is now time, revered sir, for the Lord's final Nibbana.
These words were spoken by the Lord: ‘I will not attain final Nibbana , Evil One, until this holy life of mine has become successful and prosperous, widely spread and disseminated among many, until it is well expounded among devas and men.' But now, revered sir, the Lord's holy life is successful and prosperous, widely spread and disseminated among many, it is well expounded among devas and men. It is now time, revered sir, for the Lord's final Nibbana."
스승님! 세존께서는 제게 이런 말을 하셨습니다. ‘사악한 놈이여! 내 비구니 제자들이 현명해지고 ..... 믿을 수 있는 진리 법을 설법할 (수 있을) 때까지는 마지막 닙바나를 성취하지 않을 것이다. 내 재가 남자 신도들이 .... 재가 여자 신도들이 현명해지고 믿을 수 있는 진리 법을 설법할 (수 있을) 때까지는 마지막 닙바나를 성취하지 않을 것이다.’ 스승님! 그렇지만 이제 세존의 비구니 제자들 .... 재가 남자와 재가 여자 신도들은 현명하고 .... 믿을 수 있는 진리 법을 설법할 (수 있)습니다. 스승님! 이제 세존께서는 마지막 닙바나를 성취하시옵소서. 행복하신 분께서는 마지막 닙바나를 성취하시옵소서. 스승님! 이제 세존께서 마지막 닙바나[般涅般]에 드실 때가 되었습니다.
세존께서는 제게 이런 말을 하셨습니다. ‘사악한 놈이여! 내가 [가르친] 이 성스러운 삶이 성공하고 번창하며 널리 퍼지고 많은 사람들 사이에 보급되며 널리 퍼질 때까지는, 그것이 신들과 인간 사이에서 제대로 설명될 때까지는 내 마지막 닙바나를 성취하지 않을 것이다.’ 스승님! 그렇지만 이제 세존께서 [가르치신] 성스러운 삶은 성공하고 번창하며 널리 퍼지고 많은 사람들 사이에 보급되었으며 신들과 인간 사이에서 제대로 설명되고 있습니다. 스승님! 세존께서 마지막 닙바나[般涅般]에 드실 때가 되었습니다.”
When this had been said, the Lord addressed Mara the Evil One: “You may rest content, Evil One. It will not be long before the Tathagata's final Nibbana. Three months from now the Tathagata will attain final Nibbana."
It was then, at the Capala Shrine, that the Lord, mindful and clearly comprehending, relinquished the life-force. And when the Lord had relinquished the life-force, a great earthquake occurred and a fearful hair-raising peal of thunder rent the air.
Then, on realizing its significance, the Lord uttered on that occasion this inspired utterance:
이런 말을 했을 때에 세존께서 사악한 놈인 마라에게 “사악한 놈이여! 그대가 편안히 쉴 수도 있을 것이오. 오래지 않아 여래의 마지막 닙바나가 일어날 것이오. 지금부터 세 달 뒤 여래가 마지막 닙바나를 성취할 것이오.”라고 말씀하셨다.
그리고 나서 세존께서는 차팔라 사당에서 그같이 마음을 챙기고 분명하게 파악하면서 [더 사시겠다는] 생명력을 포기하셨다. 세존께서 [더 사시겠다는] 생명력을 포기하시자 마자, 거대한 지진이 일어났고 두려워서 머리카락을 솟구치게 하는 우레의 굉음이 하늘을 꿰뚫었다.
그 때, 그것의 의미·중요성을 깨달으시고서 세존께서는 바로 그 순간 영감을 주는 이러한 게송을 읊으셨다.
The sage relinquished the force of being
Which originates the measurable and immeasurable,
Inwardly happy and composed, he sundered
Personal existence like a coat of mail.
헤아릴 수 있는 것과 헤아릴 수 없는 것들을 일으키는
존재의 힘을 성자께서 포기하셨네.
내적으로 [평화를 얻어] 행복하고 [마음이] 고요해진 그 분
마치 갑옷[을 찢어버리듯이] 자신의 생존을 분리해내었네.
