5.8 Ananda
아난다
Thus have I heard. At one time the Lord was staying near Rajagaha in the Bamboo Wood at the Squirrels’ Feeding Place. At that time, on the day of the Uposatha observance, the Venerable Ananda dressed in the forenoon, took his bowl and outer cloak, and entered Rajagaha for almsfood. Devadatta saw the Venerable Ananda walking for almsfood in Rajagaha, and on seeing him he approached the Venerable Ananda and said: “From today, friend Ananda, I shall keep the Uposatha observance and enact the business of the Order apart from the Lord and apart form the Order of bhikkhus."
Then the Venerable Ananda, having walked in Rajagaha for almsfood and returned after the meal, approached the Lord, prostrated himself, sat down to one side, and said to the Lord: “Revered sir, I had dressed in the forenoon, taken my bowl and outer cloak, and entered Rajagaha for almsfood. Devadatta saw me ... and said to me: ‘From today I shall keep the Uposatha observance ... apart from the Order of bhikkhus.' Today, revered sir, Devadatta will divide the Order; he will keep the Uposatha observance and enact the business of the Order (separately).”
Then, on realizing its significance, the Lord uttered on that occasion this inspired utterance:
이와 같이 내가 들었다. 한 때 세존께서 라자가하 근처 대나무 숲에 있는 다람쥐 사육장에 머물고 계셨다. 그 때 포살 재계일에 아난다 장로가 오전 중에 옷을 입고 자기 발우와 겉옷을 지니고 탁발을 하러 라자가하로 들어갔다. 아난다 장로가 라자가하에서 탁발을 하러 걸어다니는 것을 데바닷타가 보았고, 그를 보자 아난다 장로에게 다가가 “벗 아난다여! 오늘부터 내가 세존과 따로 또 비구들의 승단과 별도로 포살 재계를 지키고 승단의 일을 법규화(法規化)하려고 하오.”라고 말했다.
그러자 탁발을 하러 라자가하에서 걸어다니고 공양을 마치고 돌아온 아난다 장로가 세존께 다가가 무릎을 꿇어 [인사를 드리고] 한 쪽에 [떨어져] 앉아 세존께 말씀 드렸다. “스승님! 제가 오전 중에 옷을 입고 제 발우와 겉옷을 지니고 탁발을 하러 라자가하로 들어갔습니다. 데바닷타가 저를 보았고, ... 제게 ‘오늘부터 내가 ... 비구들의 승단과 별도로 포살 재계를 지키고 ...’라고 말했습니다. 스승님! 오늘 데바닷타가 승단을 분열시킬 것입니다. 그가 (별도로) 포살 재계를 지키고 승단의 일을 법규화할 것입니다.”
그 때, 그것의 의미·중요성을 깨달으시고서 세존께서는 바로 그 순간 영감을 주는 이러한 게송을 읊으셨다.
For the good to do what is good is easy,
For the bad to d o what is good is difficult;
For the bad to do what is bad is easy,
For the noble to do what is bad is difficult.
착한 사람에게는 착한 일을 하기가 쉽지만,
악한 사람에게는 착한 일을 하기 어렵네.
악한 사람에게는 악한 일을 하기가 쉽지만,
성자들에게는 악한 일을 하기가 [정말] 어렵네.
