5.7 Revata
레바타
Thus have I heard. At one time the Lord was staying near Savatthi in the Jeta Wood at Anathapindika’s monastery. On that occasion the Venerable Revata the Doubter was sitting cross-legged not far from the Lord, holding his body erect and reviewing his own purification by overcoming doubt.

Then, on realizing its significance, the Lord uttered on that occasion this inspired utterance:
이와 같이 내가 들었다. 한 때 세존께서 사밧티 근처 젯타 숲에 있는 아나타핀디카[給孤獨長者]의 수도원[祇園精舍]에 머물고 계셨다. 그 때 의심론자인 레바타 장로가 세존에게서 멀지 않은 곳에서 가부좌를 하고 앉아 몸을 곧추 세우고, 의심을 극복해서 자기 자신이 청정해지는 것을 관찰하고 있었다.

그 때, 그것의 의미·중요성을 깨달으시고서 세존께서는 바로 그 순간 영감을 주는 이러한 게송을 읊으셨다.
Whatever doubts as to here and beyond
In one’s own or another’s experience,
The meditators abandon all these,
The ardent ones leading the holy life.
성스러운 삶을 살며 열심히 정진하는 사람들,
[삼매에 들어 ]명상을 하는 사람들은
자기 자신의 혹은 다른 사람의 체험으로
이 세상과 저 세상에 대한 의심이라면 무엇이 되었던
이 모든 것을 포기하네
