5.6 Sona
소나
Thus have I heard. At one time the Lord was staying near Savatthi in the Jeta Wood at Anathapindika’s monastery. At that time the Venerable Mahakaccana was staying among the people of Avanti near Kuraraghara on Pavatta Hill with the lay follower Sona Kotikanna as his supporter.
Now while the lay follower Sona Kotikanna was in seclusion, this train of thought arose in his mind: “According to how Master Mahakaccana teaches Dhamma, it is not easy for one living at home to practise the holy life wholly fulfilled, wholly purified, and polished like a conch shell. Suppose I were t have my hair and beard shaved off, clothe myself in the yellow robes, and go forth from home to the homeless state."
이와 같이 내가 들었다. 한 때 세존께서 사밧티 근처 젯타 숲에 있는 아나타핀디카[給孤獨長者]의 수도원[祇園精舍]에 머물고 계셨다. 그 때 마하카차나 장로는 쿠라라가라 근처 파밧타 언덕에서 재가 신자인 소나 코티칸나를 후원자로 하여 아반티 사람들 사이에 머물고 있었다.
그런데 재가 신자인 소나 코티칸나가 외떨어진 곳에서 홀로 [선정에 잠겨] 있는 동안에, 그의 마음속에 이런 일련의 생각이 떠올랐다. “마하카차나 스승님께서 진리 법을 가르치시는 길에 따르면, [가족과 함께] 가정 생활을 하는 사람이 원만하게 수행되고 철저하게 청정해지며 고동[조개] 껍데기처럼 반짝거리게 닦아진 성스러운 삶[淸淨한 수행자의 삶]을 실천하기는 쉽지 않다. 내가 머리털과 수염을 밀어버리고 누런 옷[僧服]을 입고 집을 떠나 집 없는 상태로 출가를 하면 어떨까?”
So the lay follower Sona Koticanna went to the Venerable Mahakaccana, prostrated himself, sat down to one side, and said: “Just now, revered sir, while in seclusion (I thought): ‘According to how Master Mahakaccana, teaches Dhamma ... and go forth from home to the homeless state.' Allow me, revered Master Mahakaccana, to go forth."
When this was said, the Venerable Mahakaccana replied to the lay follower Sona Kotikanna: “Sona, it is hard to lead the holy life with its one meal a day and sleeping alone for the rest of one's life. Come now, Sona, devote yourself to the teaching of the Buddhas while remaining a householder, and try for a limited period to lead the holy life, eating one meal a day and sleeping alone.”
Then the lay follower Sona Kotikanna’s idea of going forth subsided.
그러자 재가 신자인 소나 코타칸나는 마하카차나 장로에게 다가가 무릎을 꿇어 [인사를 드리고] 한 쪽에 [떨어져] 앉아서 “스승님! 지금 막 외떨어진 곳에서 홀로 [선정에 잠겨] 있는 동안에 (제가) ‘마하카차나 스승님께서 진리 법을 가르치시는 길에 따르면, .... 집을 떠나 집 없는 상태로 출가를 하면 어떨까?’(라고 생각했습니다.) 존경하는 마하카차나 스승님! 제 출가를 허락해 주시옵소서.”라고 말했다.
이렇게 말을 했을 때, 마하카차나 장로가 재가 신자인 소타 코타칸나에게 “소나여! 남은 일생 동안 하루 한 끼만 먹고 홀로 외롭게 잠을 자는 성스러운 [출가 수행자의] 삶을 사는 것은 어렵소. 소나여! 자 이제, 그대는 가장[재가자]으로 남아 있으면서 부처님들의 가르침[諸佛敎]에 일신을 바치고, 제한된 기간에만 하루 한 끼만 먹고 홀로 외롭게 잠을 자는 성스러운 [출가 수행자의] 삶을 살도록 하시오.”라고 대답하였다.
그러자 재가 신자인 소나 코티칸나의 출가를 하겠다는 생각은 진정되었다.
On a second occasion while the lay follower Sona Kotikanna was in seclusion again the same thought arose. He went to the Venerable Mahakaccana and asked to go forth, but again he received the same reply. On the third occasion, however the Venerable Mahakaccana allowed the lay follower Sona Kotikanna to go forth.
At that time there were few bhikkhus in the southern country of Avanti, so (only) after a lapse of three years did the Venerable Mahakaccana, with trouble and difficulty, manage to assemble together from here and there a group of ten (bhikkhus to form) an Order of bhikkhus and give the higher ordination to the Venerable Sona.
재가 신자인 소나 코티칸나가 외떨어진 곳에서 홀로 [선정에 잠겨] 있는 동안에 재차 똑 같은 생각이 다시 일어났다. 그는 마하카차나 장로에게 가서 출가하게 해달라고 간청하였으나, 또 다시 [앞서와] 똑 같은 대답을 들었다. 그러나 세 번째 [간청]에 마하카차나 장로는 재가 신자인 소나 코티칸나가 출가하도록 허락하였다.
그 때에 아반티 나라 남쪽 지방에는 비구들이 별로 없었고 따라서 3년이 지난 뒤에(서야) 마하카차나 장로가 이곳 저곳에서 그곳에 비구들의 승단을 (구성할 수 있는) 10명의 (비구들) 모임을 힘들게 모이게 해서 소나 장로에게 구족계를 줄 수 있었다.
Then on emerging form seclusion after the rains retreat, the following thought occurred to the Venerable Sona: “I have not seen Lord face to face. I have only heard that he is like this and like that. If my preceptor would give me permission, I would go to see the Lord, the Arahat, the Fully Enlightened One."
So the Venerable Sona, on emerging from seclusion in the evening, approached the Venerable Mahakaccana, prostrated himself, sat down to one side, and said: “Just now, revered sir, while in seclusion (I thought): ‘I have not seen the Lord.... If my preceptor would give me permission, I would go to see the Lord, the Arahat, the Fully Enlightened One.’”
그리고 나서 우안거 뒤에 외따로 떨어져서 홀로 [선정 수행을 하다가] 깨어난 소나 장로에게 다음과 같은 생각이 일어났다. “나는 [이제까지] 세존을 친견하지 못했다. 그 분이 이렇고 저런 분이라는 것을 듣기만 했을 뿐이다. 만약 내 계사(戒師)께서 허락해주시면, 아라한, 원만하게 깨달으신 분인 세존을 뵈러 갈 터인데.”
그리하여 저녁에 소나 장로는 외따로 떨어져서 홀로 [선정 수행을 하다가] 깨어나서 마하카차나 장로에게 다가가 무릎을 꿇어 [인사를 드리고] 한 쪽에 [떨어져] 앉아 말씀 드렸다. “스승님! 지금 막 제가 외따로 떨어져서 홀로 [선정 수행을 하는] 동안에 ‘나는 [이제까지] 세존을 친견하지 못했다. .... 만약 내 계사(戒師)께서 허락해주시면, 아라한, 원만하게 깨달으신 분인 세존을 뵈러 갈 터인데.’라고 (생각했습니다.)”
“Good, good, Sona! Go, Sona, and see the Lord, the Arahat, the Fully Enlightened One. Sona, you should see that Lord who inspires trust and confidence, who has calmed senses and tranquil mind, who has attained perfect poise and calm, who is controlled, a perfected one, watchful with restrained senses. When you see him, pay homage in my name with your head at the Lord's feet and ask whether he is free from sickness and ailment and is healthy, strong, and living in comfort, saying: ‘My preceptor, revered sir, Mahakaccana, pays homage with his head at the Lord's feet and asks whether he is free from sickness ... and living in comfort.'"
“Very well, revered sir," said the Venerable Sona. And pleased and appreciative of the Venerable Mahakaccana, he arose from his seat, prostrated himself before the Venerable Mahakaccana, (and left) keeping his right side towards him. Having set his lodging in order and taken his bowl and outer cloak, he departed on tour for Savatthi. Walking on tour by stages, he reached Savatthi, the Jeta Wood and Anathapindika’s monastery, and went to the Lord. Having approached the Lord, he prostrated himself, sat down to one side, and said to the Lord: “My preceptor, revered sir, the Venerable Mahakaccana ... asks whether the Lord is ... living in comfort.”
“소나여, 착하고 착하구려! 소나여, 가서 아라한, 원만하게 깨달으신 분인 세존을 뵈시오. 소나여! 신뢰와 믿음을 생기게 하시는 분, 감각 기관들을 고요하게 하고 마음을 평온하게 하신 분, 완벽[원만]한 침착과 고요함을 성취하신 분, [스스로 잘] 다스려진 분, 완성에 이르신 분, 절제된 감관으로 [중생을] 살피시는 분인 세존을 그대는 꼭 뵈어야 하오. 그대가 그 분을 뵙거든, ‘스승님! 제 계사인 마하카차나가 그 분 머리를 세존의 발에 대어 경배를 드리고 혹 그 분께서 편찮으신 데는 없으신 지, ... 쾌적하게 지내시는지’라고 말씀을 드려서 내 이름으로 세존의 발에 그대 머리를 대어 경배를 드리고 혹 그 분께서 편찮으시고 불편하신 데는 없으신 지, 건강하고 쾌적하게 지내시는지 여쭈시오.”
소나 장로는 “스승님! 잘 알겠습니다.”고 말했다. 그리고는 마하카차나 장로의 말씀에 기뻐하고 고마워하며 그는 자기 자리에서 일어나 마하카차나 장로 앞에 무릎을 꿇어 [작별 인사를 드리고] 그 분을 향해 오른 쪽으로 돌아서 [떠났다.] 숙소를 정리하고 자기 발우와 겉옷을 지니고 사밧티를 향한 유행(遊行) 길을 떠났다. 쉬엄쉬엄 걸으면서 여행을 해서 사밧티[舍衛城]의 젯타 숲에 있는 아나타핀디카[給孤獨長者]의 수도원[祇園精舍]에 도착해서 세존께 갔다. 세존께 다가간 그는 무릎을 꿇어 [인사를 드리고] 한 쪽에 [떨어져] 앉아 세존께 “스승님! 제 계사인 마하카차나 장로가 .... 세존께서 .... 쾌적하게 지내시는지 여쭙니다.”고 말씀 드렸다.
“Are you well, bhikkhu? Are you in good health? Are you but little fatigued by the journey coming here and been having no difficulty obtaining almsfood?"
“I am well, Lord. I am in good health, Lord. I am not fatigued by the journey coming here, revered sir, and have been having no difficulty obtaining almsfood."
Then the Lord said to the Venerable Ananda, “Arrange a lodging, Ananda, for this newly arrived bhikkhu."
Then the Venerable Ananda thought: “When the Lord orders me, saying, ‘Arrange a lodging, Ananda, for this newly arrived bhikkhu,' it is because he wished to be alone with this bhikkhu; the Lord wishes to be alone with the Venerable Sona." So in the dwelling where the Lord was living he arranged a lodging for the Venerable Sona.
Then the Lord, having spent much of the night seated in the open air, washed his feet and entered the dwelling. And the Venerable Sona did likewise. Then towards dawn the Lord got up from his seat and requested the Venerable Sona, “I would like you, bhikkhu, to recite Dhamma."
“비구여! 그대는 편안한가요? 건강은 좋은가요? 이곳까지 오는 여정에 지치지는 않았고 탁발 음식을 얻는 데 어려움은 없었나요?”
“세존이시여! 저는 편안합니다. 세존이시여! 저는 건강합니다. 스승님! 이곳까지 오는 여정에 지치지도 않았고 탁발 음식을 얻는 데에도 어려움 하나 없었습니다.”
그러자 세존께서 아난다 장로에게 “아난다여! 새로 온 이 비구를 위해 숙소를 마련해 주시오.”라고 말씀하셨다.
그 때 아난다 장로가 “세존께서 ‘아난다여! 새로 온 이 비구를 위해 숙소를 마련해 주시오.’라고 내게 분부를 하실 때에는, 그 분께서 이 비구와 함께 [다른 사람들과 떨어져서] 따로 머물고 싶어하시기 때문이다. 세존께서는 소나 장로와 함께 따로 머물고 싶어하신다.”라고 생각했다. 그리하여 세존께서 머무시는 처소에 소나 장로를 위해 숙소를 마련하였다.
그리고 나서 [정사] 밖에서 앉아 대부분의 밤 시간을 보내신 세존께서는 당신 발을 씻으시고 처소로 들어가셨다. 그리고 소나 장로도 그와 같이 하였다. 그러다가 새벽이 가까워지자 세존께서 당신 자리에서 일어나 소나 장로에게 “비구여! 그대가 진리 법을 암송해보면 좋겠는데요.”라고 요청하셨다.
“Very well, revered sir,” the Venerable Sona replied to the Lord, and he chanted the whole of the sixteen sections of the Atthakavagga. At the conclusion of the Venerable Sona's chanting, the Lord was highly pleased and said: “Good, good, bhikkhu! You have learnt the sixteen sections of the Atthakavagga well, bhikkhu; you have considered and remembered them well. You possess a fine voice, incisive and distinct, that makes the meaning clear. How many years (seniority) do you have, bhikkhu?"
“I have one year, Lord."
“Why, bhikkhu, did you delay so long?"
“For a long time, revered sir, I had seen the danger in sensual pleasures, but the household life, with its many activities and things to be done, held me back.”
Then, on realizing its significance, the Lord uttered on that occasion this inspired utterance:
소나 장로가 세존께 “스승님! 잘 알겠습니다”고 대답을 드리고 아타카박가의 16개 항목 전체를 낭송하였다. 소나 장로의 낭송이 마무리되자, 세존께서는 대단히 기뻐하시고 “비구여, 착하고도 착하구려! 비구여, 그대는 아타카박가의 16개 항목 전체를 제대로 배웠고, 그것들을 깊이 생각하고 제대로 기억해냈소. 그대는 의미를 뚜렷하게 해주는, 카랑카랑하고 선명한 멋진 목소리를 가졌소. 비구여, 그대는 법랍이 어떻게 되시오?”라고 말씀하셨다.
“세존이시여! 제 법랍은 1년입니다.”
“비구여! 어찌하여 그렇게 오래도록 지연되었소?”
“스승님! 저는 오랜 동안 감각적 쾌락에 따르는 위험을 보아왔습니다만, 해야 할 활동과 일이 많은 재가 생활이 [출가를 못하게] 저를 붙잡아 왔습니다.”
그 때, 그것의 의미·중요성을 깨달으시고서 세존께서는 바로 그 순간 영감을 주는 이러한 게송을 읊으셨다.
Having seen the danger in the world,
Having known the state without clinging,
A noble one does not delight in evil;
In evil a pure one finds no delight.
세상에 있는 위험을 보고
집착이 없는 경지를 아는
성자는 악惡을 즐기지 않네.
청정한 사람은 악에서 즐거움을 찾는 일이 없네.
