파탈리 마을
8.1 Parinibbana (1)

Thus have I heard. At one time the Lord was staying near Savatthi in the Jeta Wood at Anathapindika’s monastery. On that occasion the Lord was instructing, rousing, inspiring, and gladdening the bhikkhus with a Dhamma talk connected with Nibbana, and those bhikkhus, being receptive and attentive and concentrating the whole mind, were intent on listening to Dhamma.
Then, on realizing its significance, the Lord uttered on that occasion this inspired utterance:
이와 같이 내가 들었다. 한 때 세존께서 사밧티 근처 젯타 숲에 있는 아나타핀디카[給孤獨長者]의 승원[祇園精舍]에 머물고 계셨다. 그 때에 세존께서 닙바나와 관계된 법담(法談)으로 비구들을 가르치고 각성시키고 격려하고 기쁘게 해주고 계셨으며, 이해가 빠르고 주의 깊고 온 마음을 집중하였던 그 비구들은 진리 법에 귀를 기울여 듣는 데에 전념했다.
그 때, 그것의 의미·중요성을 깨달으시고서 세존께서는 바로 그 순간 영감을 주는 이러한 게송을 읊으셨다.
There is, bhikkuhs, that base where there is no earth, no water, no fire, no air; no base consisting of the infinity of space, no base consisting of the infinity of consciousness, no base consisting of nothingness, no base consisting of neither-perception-nor-non-perception; neither this world nor another world nor both; neither sun nor moon. Here, bhikkhus, I say there is no coming, no going, no staying, no deceasing, no uprising. Not fixed, not movable, it has no support. Just this is the end of suffering.
비구들이여! 흙도 없고 물도 없고 불도 없으며 바람도 없는 곳이 있소. 무한한 허공으로 이루어진 곳[空無邊處]도 아니고, 무한한 식별[작용]으로 이루어진 곳[識無邊處]도 아니며, ‘무’로 이루어진 곳[無所有處]도 아니고, ‘지각[작용][想]이 아니고 지각[작용]이 아닌 것도 아닌 것’으로 이루어진 곳[非想非非想處]이 아니네. 이 세상도 아니고, 또 다른 세상도 아니며 둘 다 아니네. 해도 아니고 달도 아니네. 비구들이여! 여기서 나는 오는 것도 없고 가는 것도 없으며, 머무름도 없고 죽어감도 없으며 일어남도 없다고 말하네. 고정된 것도 아니며 움직이는 것도 아니고 의존하는 곳도 없네. 바로 이것이 고통의 끝이네.
