7.9 The Well
우물
Thus have I heard. At one time the Lord was journeying among the Mallas together with a large Order of bhikkhus and came to the brahmin village of the Mallas called Thuna. The brahmin householders who lived in Thuna heard: “The recluse Gotama, the Sakyan son who went forth from the Sakya clan, has been journeying among the Mallas together with a large Order of bhikkhus and has arrived at Thuna." They then filled the well to the brim with grass and chaff, thinking, “Don't let those shaven-headed recluses get water to drink."
Then the Lord stepped off the road, and going up to the foot of a certain tree, sat down on a seat prepared for him. Sitting there the Lord addressed the Venerable Ananda: “Come, Ananda, fetch me some water from that well."
Thereupon the Venerable Ananda said to the Lord: “Just now, revered sir, the brahmin householders living in Thuna filled the well to the brim with grass and chaff, thinking, ‘Don't let those shaven-headed recluses get water to drink.'"
Then a second time the Lord addressed the Venerable Ananda: “Come, Ananda, fetch me some water...." And a second time the Venerable Ananda said to the Lord: “Just now, revered sir, the brahmin householders filled the well to the brim with grass and chaff...."
Then for a third time the Lord addressed the Venerable Ananda: “Come, Ananda, fetch me some water from that well."
“Yes, revered sir," the Venerable Ananda replied, and taking a bowl he went to the well. Now as the Venerable Ananda was approaching it, the well threw up all its grass and chaff from its mouth and stood filled to the brim with pure, clean, clear water, as if it were overflowing. Then the Venerable Ananada thought: “It is indeed wonderful, it is indeed marvellous, the great supernormal potency and power of the Tathagata! As I was approaching this well, it threw up all that grass and chaff from its mouth and now stands filled to the brim with pure, clean, clear water, as if it were overflowing." And taking some water in the bowl he approached the Lord and said: “It is indeed wonderful, it is indeed marvellous, the great supernormal potency and power of the Tathagata! This well ... now stands filled to the brim with pure, clean, clear water, as if it were overflowing. Drink the water, Lord. Drink the water, Sugata.”
Then, on realizing its significance, the Lord uttered on that occasion this inspired utterance:
이와 같이 내가 들었다. 한 때 세존께서 대규모의 비구 승단과 함께 말라족 사람들 사이에서 유행 중에 투나라고 부르는 말라족의 바라문 마을에 들어가셨다. 투나에 살고 있는 바라문 재가자들은 “사키야족에서 출가한 사키야족의 아들, 고타마 수행자가 대규모의 비구 승단과 함께 말라족 사람들 사이에서 유행 중에 투나에 도착하였다”는 [소식을] 들었다. 그러자 그들은 “머리를 빡빡 깎은 수행자들이 마실 물을 구하지 못하게 하자”고 생각하면서 잡초와 쓰레기로 우물 언저리까지 메워 버렸다.
그 때 세존께서 큰길에서 벗어나 어떤 나무 아래로 올라가시어 당신을 위해 준비된 자리에 앉으셨다. 그곳에 앉으신 세존께서 아난다 장로에게 “자, 아난다여! 저 우물에 가서 물을 좀 가져다주시오.”라고 말씀하셨다.
아난자 장로가 곧바로 세존께 “스승님이시여! 지금 막 투나에 살고 있는 바라문 재가자들이 “머리를 빡빡 깎은 수행자들이 마실 물을 구하지 못하게 하자”고 생각하면서 잡초와 쓰레기로 우물 언저리까지 메워 버렸습니다.”라고 말씀 드렸다.
그러자 세존께서는 아난다 장로에게 재차 “자, 아난다여! ..... 물을 좀 가져다 주시오.”라고 말씀하셨다. 그리고 아난다 장로는 재차 세존께 “스승님이시여! 지금 막 투나에 살고 있는 바라문 재가자들이 .... 잡초와 쓰레기로 우물 언저리까지 메워 버렸습니다.”라고 말씀 드렸다.
그러자 세존께서는 아난다 장로에게 세 번째로 “자, 아난다여! 저 우물에 가서 물을 좀 가져다 주시오.”라고 말씀하셨다.
아난다 장로는 “스승님, 알겠습니다.”라고 대답을 드리고는 발우를 갖고서 우물로 갔다. 그런데 아난다 장로가 그것에 다가가자 우물이 입구에서 잡초와 쓰레기들을 모두 뱉어내 , 마치 흘러 넘치는 것처럼 언저리까지 맑고 깨끗한 물이 가득 찼다. 그러자 아난다 장로는 생각했다. “여래의 신통력은 참으로 불가사의하고 참으로 경탄할 만 하구나! 내가 이 우물에 다가오자 입구에서 잡초와 쓰레기들을 모두 뱉어내고, 마치 흘러 넘치는 것처럼 언저리까지 맑고 깨끗한 물이 가득 찼네.” 그리고는 발우에 물을 담아 가지고 세존께 다가와 말씀 드렸다. “여래의 신통력은 참으로 불가사의하고 참으로 경탄할 만 하옵니다! 이 우물이 .....마치 흘러 넘치는 것처럼 언저리까지 맑고 깨끗한 물이 가득 찼습니다. 세존이시여! 물을 드시옵소서. 행복한 분이시여! 물을 드시옵소서.”
그 때, 그것의 의미·중요성을 깨달으시고서 세존께서는 바로 그 순간 영감을 주는 이러한 게송을 읊으셨다.
What use there for a well
If there is water everywhere?
When craving’s root is severed
What should one go about seeking?
[세상] 어디에든지 모두 물이 있다면,
우물은 무엇에 쓸까?
갈애의 뿌리를 끊어버렸으니
무엇을 찾으러 돌아 다녀야 할까?
