7.6 The Destruction of Craving
갈애의 멸진(滅盡)
Thus have I heard. At one time the Lord was staying near Savatthi in the Jeta Wood at Anathapindika's monastery. On that occasion the Venerable Kondanna was sitting cross-legged not far from the Lord, holding his body erect and reviewing his deliverance by the destruction of craving.
The Lord saw the Venerable Annata Kondanna sitting cross-legged not far away, holding his body erect and reviewing his deliverance by the destruction of craving.
Then, on realizing its significance, the Lord uttered on that occasion this inspired utterance:
이와 같이 내가 들었다. 한 때 세존께서 사밧티 근처 젯타 숲에 있는 아나타핀디카[給孤獨長者]의 승원[祇園精舍]에 머물고 계셨다. 그 때에 콘단나 장로가 세존에게서 멀지 않은 곳에서 가부좌를 하고 앉아 몸을 곧추 세우고 갈애를 멸진하여 [성취한] 해탈[의 경지]를 관하고 있었다.
세존께서 안나타 콘단나가 멀지 않은 곳에서 가부좌를 하고 앉아 몸을 곧추 세우고 갈애를 멸진하여 [성취한] 해탈[의 경지]를 관하고 있는 모습을 보셨다.
그 때, 그것의 의미·중요성을 깨달으시고서 세존께서는 바로 그 순간 영감을 주는 이러한 게송을 읊으셨다.
For whom there is no root and soil
There are no leaves, how then creepers?
Who can blame that heroic sage
Free from every form of bondage?
Even the devas praise such a one,
By Brahma too he is praised.
뿌리와 흙이 하나도 없고
잎도 하나 없는 사람에게 어찌 넝쿨이 있으랴?
온갖 형태의 속박에서 벗어나 자유로운
저 영웅과도 같은 성자를 누가 비난할 수 있으랴?
그와 같은 사람은 심지어 신들이 칭찬하고
브라흐마[梵天] 또한 그를 찬양하네.
