밧디야 (3)
Thus have I heard. At one time the Lord was staying near Savatthi in the Jeta Wood at Anathapindika’s monastery. On that occasion the Venerable Bhaddiya the dwarf, following behind a number of bhikkhus, was approaching the Lord.
The Lord saw from afar the Venerable Bhaddiya the dwarf coming, following behind a number of bhikkhus ― ugly, unsightly, deformed, and generally despised by the bhikkhus. On seeing him he said to the bhikkhus: “Bhikkhus, do you see that bhikkhu coming, following behind a number of bhikkhus ― ugly, unsightly, deformed, and generally despised by the bhikkhus?"
“Yes, revered sir."
“Bhikkhus, that bhikkhu is of great supernormal potency and power. It is not easy to find any attainment which that bhikkhu has not already attained. He has realized here and now through his own direct knowledge that unequalled goal of the holy life, for the sake of which sons of good family rightly go forth from home to the homeless state, and entering into it he abides in it."
Then, on realizing its significance, the Lord uttered on that occasion this inspired utterance:
이와 같이 내가 들었다. 한 때 세존께서 사밧티 근처 젯타 숲에 있는 아나타핀디카[給孤獨長者]의 승원[祇園精舍]에 머물고 계셨다. 그 때에 난장이 밧디야 장로가 수많은 비구들의 뒤를 따라 세존께 다가가고 있었다.
세존께서는 난장이 밧디야 장로가 추하고 보기 흉하며 기형에다가 비구들에게 조롱을 받으며 수많은 비구들의 뒤를 따라 오고 있는 것을 보셨다. 그[의 그런 모습]을 보신 그 분께서 비구들에게 “비구들이여! 추하고 보기 흉하며 기형에다가 비구들에게 조롱을 받으며 수많은 비구들의 뒤를 따라 오고 있는 저 비구가 보이나요?”라고 말씀하셨다.
“스승님이시여! 예, [보입니다].”
“비구들이여! 저 비구는 위대한 신통력을 지닌 사람이오. 저 비구가 아직 성취하지 못한 [깨달음·삼매의] 그 어떤 성취를 찾기도 쉽지 않소. 그는 자기 자신이 직접 [깨친] 지혜를 통해 지금 여기에서, [오로지] 그것을 위해 좋은 가문 출신 남자들이 집에서 [나와] 집 없는 상태로 올바르게 출가하는 성스러운 삶이라는 [도저히] 같아질 수 없는 목적을 증득하였으며, 그 [경지] 안에 들어가 거기에 머물고 있소.”
그 때, 그것의 의미·중요성을 깨달으시고서 세존께서는 바로 그 순간 영감을 주는 이러한 게송을 읊으셨다.
Faultless, with its white awning,
The one-spoked chariot rolls;
See him coming, trouble-free,
The stream cut, no more in bondage.
하얀 차양으로 [덮여] 흠잡을 곳 하나 없는,
바퀴 살이 하나 뿐인 수레가 굴러가네.
근심에서 벗어나고 [번뇌의] 흐름이 끊기고
더 이상 속박도 하나 없는 그가 오는 모습을 보라.
