답바 (1)
Thus have I heard. At one time the Lord was staying near Rajagaha in the Bamboo Wood at the Squirrels' Feeding Place. Then the Venerable Dabba Mallaputta approached the Lord, prostrated himself, sat down to one side, and said to the Lord, “Now, Sugata, is the time for my final Nibbana."
“Do now, Dabba, what you think it time to do."
Then the Venerable Dabba Mallaputta arose from his seat, prostrated himself before the Lord, and keeping his right side towards him, rose up in the air; and in the sky, while sitting cross-legged in space, he entered into the fire element, emerged, and attained final Nibbana.
Now when the Venerable Dabba Mallaputta ... entered into the fire element, emerged, and attained final Nibbana, his body was burnt up and utterly consumed so that neither ashes nor soot remained behind. Just as when ghee or oil is burnt and consumed, neither ashes nor soot remain behind, even so it was when the Venerable Dabba Mallaputta attained final Nibbana.
Then, on realizing its significance, the Lord uttered on that occasion this inspired utterance:
이와 같이 내가 들었다. 한 때 세존께서 라자가하 근처 대나무 숲에 있는 다람쥐 사육장에 머물고 계셨다. 그 때에 답바 말라풋타 장로가 세존께 다가와서 무릎을 꿇어 [인사를 드리고] 한 쪽에 [떨어져] 앉아 세존께 “행복하신 분이시여! 이제 제가 마지막 닙바나에 [들] 시간이옵니다.”라고 말씀 드렸다.
“답바여! 그렇게 해야 할 때라고 생각하면 그렇게 하시오.”
그러자 답바 말라풋타 장로가 자리에서 일어나 세존 앞에 무릎을 꿇어 [작별 인사를 드리고] 그 분을 향해서 오른 쪽으로 돌아서 공중으로 솟아 버렸다.그리고 허공에서 결가부좌하고 있는 동안에 불의 삼매로 들어갔다가 깨어나서 마지막 닙바나를 성취하였다.
그런데 답바 말라풋타 장로가 ... 불의 삼매로 들어갔다가 깨어나서 마지막 닙바나를 성취하였을 때, 그의 유체(遺體)를 다비(茶毘)하자 재나 검댕이를 하나도 남기지 않을 정도로 완전히 타서 없어졌다. 버터나 기름을 태워 없어지면 재나 검댕이를 하나도 남기지 않는 것과 똑같이, 답바 말라풋타 장로가 마지막 닙바나를 성취하였을 때에도 그와 같았다.
그 때, 그것의 의미·중요성을 깨달으시고서 세존께서는 바로 그 순간 영감을 주는 이러한 게송을 읊으셨다.
The body disintegrated, perception ceased,
All feelings became cool,
Mental activities were calmed,
And consciousness came to an end.
몸은 부서져 흩어지고 지각 작용은 멈추었으며
모든 느낌이 차가워졌고
정신 활동은 고요하며
식별 작용도 끝나 버렸네.
