8.7 The Two Ways
갈림길
Thus have I heard. At one time the Lord was journeying along a road among the people of Kosala with the Venerable Nagasamala as his attendant. As they went along the Venerable Nagasamala saw that the road divided, and on perceiving this, said to the Lord: “Revered sir, that is the way; let us go that way." Whereupon the Lord said to the Venerable Nagasamala, “This is the way, Nagasamala; let us go this way."
A second time and a third time the Venerable Nagasamala said to the Lord: “Revered sir, that is the way; let us go that way." And a second time and a third time the Lord said: “This is the way, Nagasamala; let us go this way."
Then the Venerable Nagasamala put the Lord's bowl and cloak down on the ground and went off, saying, “Here, revered sir, is the Lord's bowl and cloak." As the Venerable Nagasamala was going along that road, robbers came upon him, knocked him down and kicked him, and broke his bowl and tore his robe. Then the Venerable Nagasamala, with broken bowl and torn robe, went back to the Lord. Having prostrated himself before the Lord, he sat down to one side and said: “Just now, revered sir, as I was going along that road, robbers came upon me, knocked me down and kicked me, and broke my bowl and tore my robe.”
Then, on realizing its significance, the Lord uttered on that occasion this inspired utterance:
이와 같이 내가 들었다. 한 때 세존께서 나가사마라 장로를 시자로 거느리시고 코살라 사람들 사이에서 길을 따라 유행(遊行)을 하고 계셨었다. 그들이 함께 [길을] 가는데, 나가사마라 장로는 길이 갈리어 있는 것을 보았고, 이것을 보자마자 세존께 “스승님이시여! 저것이 [맞는] 길이오니, 저 길로 가시지요.”라고 말씀 드렸다. [그런데] 그에 대해 세존께서는 나가사마라 장로에게 “이것이 [맞는] 길이니, 이 길로 갑시다.”고 말씀하셨다.
두 번 그리고 세 번째로 나가사마라 장로는 세존께 “스승님이시여! 저것이 [맞는] 길이오니, 저 길로 가시지요.”라고 말씀 드렸다. 그리고 세존께서는 두 번, 세 번째로 “이것이 [맞는] 길이니, 이 길로 갑시다.”고 말씀하셨다.
그러자 나가사마라 장로는 세존의 발우와 겉옷[架裟]을 땅바닥에 놓아두고 “스승님이시여! 여기에 세존의 발우와 겉옷이 있습니다.”라고 말하면서 [혼자서] 떠나 버렸다. 나가사마라 장로가 그쪽 길을 따라 가고 있을 때, [얼마 되지 않아] 그에게 도둑들이 덮쳐 그를 [때려서] 땅에 쓰러뜨리고 걷어찼으며, 발우를 부수고 옷을 찢어버렸다. 그리고 나서 나가사마라 장로는 발우가 깨지고 옷은 찢어진 채 세존께 돌아갔다. 세존 앞에 무릎을 꿇어 [인사를 드리고] 나서 그는 한 쪽에 [떨어져] 앉아 말씀 드렸다. “스승님이시여! 이제 막 제가 저쪽 길로 가고 있는데 도둑들이 저를 덮쳐서 땅에 쓰러뜨리고 걷어찼으며, 제 발우와 부수고 옷을 찢어버렸습니다.”
그 때, 그것의 의미·중요성을 깨달으시고서 세존께서는 바로 그 순간 영감을 주는 이러한 게송을 읊으셨다.
Travelling together, dwelling as one,
A wise man must mix with foolish people.
But having known a bad one he leaves him behind
As the milk-drinking heron leaves the water.
함께 여행하며, 마치 한 몸인 것처럼 머무는
현자는 어리석은 이들과 섞일 수 밖에 없네.
마치 우유를 마시는 백로가 물을 [쳐다보지도 않고] 버리고 가듯,
악한 사람을 알아 보았으므로, 그를 버려두고 가네.
