숫타니파타(Suttanipata)
팔리어로Sutta는 경전,
Nipata는 모음(集)이란 의미이다.
그러므로 숫타니파타(Suttanipata)란 곧 경집을 말한다.
숫타니파타의 구성은 사품(蛇品), 소품(小品), 대품(大品), 의품(義品), 피안도품(彼岸道品)의 5장으로 되어 있다.
사품(蛇品)은 12개의 경을 수록,
수행자는 뱀이 제 낡은 허물을 벗어 버리듯 차안과 피안을 다 버린다는 구절이 반복되기 때문에 이런 이름이 붙여졌다.
소품은 짧은14개의 경을,
대품은 비교적 긴11개의 경을 수록하고 있다.
의품은 원어인Atthakavagga에 따라 팔게품(八偈品)이라고도 하며 예로부터16경의 구성을 유지하며 전해져 왔는데 한역 의품경이 바로 이것이다.
피안도품은 16인의 학생들이 부처님께 질문하고 이에 대해 부처님께서 답하는 문답16절과 서와 결을 합한18절로 되어 있다.
Ⅰ. URAGAVAGGA(蛇品)
1.URAGASUTTA(蛇經)
♠He who restrains anger when it has arisen, as they by medicines restrain the
poison of the snake spreading in the body, that Bhikkhu leaves this and the
further shore, as a snake quits its old worn out skin.
약으로 뱀의 독이 몸에 퍼지는 것을 막듯,
화가 일어날 때 억제하는 수행자는 차안과 피안을 떠난다,
뱀이 제 낡은 허물을 벗듯.
♠He who has cut off passion entirely, as they cut off the lotus-flower growing
in a lake, after diving into the water, that Bhikkhu leaves this and the
further shore, as a snake quits its old worn out skin.
연못에서 자라는 연꽃을 물속에 들어가 꺾듯,
애욕을 완전히 끊은 수행자는 차안과 피안을 떠난다,
뱀이 제 낡은 허물을 벗듯.
♠He who has cut off craving entirely, the flowing, the quickly running, after
drying it up, that Bhikkhu leaves this and the further shore, as a snake quits
its old worn out skin.
넘쳐 흐르는 갈애의 물살을 완전히 말려버린 수행자는 차안과 피안을 떠난다,
뱀이 제 낡은 허물을 벗듯.
♠He who has destroyed arrogance entirely, as the flood destroys a very frail
bridge of reeds, that Bhikkhu leaves this and the further shore, as a snake
quits its old worn out skin.
홍수가 연약한 갈대 다리를 부수듯 교만을 완전히 없앤 수행자는 차안과 피안을 떠난다,
뱀이 제 낡은 허물을 벗듯.
