Whatever a man sacrifice in this world
as an offering or as an oblation
for a whole year in order to gain merit,
the whole of it is not worth a quarter (a farthing);
reverence shown to the righteous is better.
공덕을 지으려고 크고 작은 제사를
일 년을 두고 계속 올리는 사람도 있으리라.
그러나 그로써 얻어지는 공덕은
바른 길을 수행하는 성스러운 빅쿠에게
한 순간의 예경을 올리는 것의
사분의 일에 지나지 않는다.
