누구든지 간에 하찮은 감각적 쾌락의 욕망을 다스리면
그에게는 반드시 슬픔의 독이 사라진다.
마치 연꽃잎 위의 물방울이
스스로 굴러 떨어지듯이.
He who overcomes this fierce thirst, difficult
to be conquered in this world, sufferings fall off from him,
like water-drops from a lotus leaf.
그러므로 여래는 여기 모인 많은 사람들에게
진실로 설하나니
하찮은 감각적 쾌락의 욕망을 뿌리째 뽑아 버리라,
마치 비라나 향초를 뽑아낸 뒤에 우시라 향을 얻듯이
그리하여 마치 갈대를 휩쓸어 버리는 홍수 같은 생사의 마라가
다시는 너희를 파괴하지 못하게 하라.
This salutary word I tell you, `Do ye, as many as are here assembled,
dig up the root of thirst, as he who wants the sweet- scented Usira root
must dig up the Birana grass, that Mara (the tempter) may not crush
you again and again, as the stream crushes the reeds.'
