27. The Development of Loving-kindness
자비심을 닦음
This was said by the Lord....
"Bhikkhus, whatever grounds there are for making merit productive of future birth, all these do not equal a sixteenth part of the mind-release of loving-kindness. The mind-release of loving-kindness surpasses them and shines forth, bright and brilliant.Just as the radiance of all the stars does not equal a sixteenth part of the moon's radiance, but the moon's radiance surpasses them and shines forth, bright and brilliant, even so, whatever grounds there for making merit productive of a future birth, all these do not equal a sixteenth part of the mind-release of loving-kindness....
Just as in the last month of the rainy season, in the autumn, when the sky is clear and free of clouds, the sun, on ascending, dispels the darkness of space and shines forth, bright and brilliant, even so, whatever grounds there are for making merit productive of a future birth, all these do not equal a sixteenth part of the mind-release of loving-kindness....
And just as in the night, at the moment of dawn, the morning star shines forth, bright and brilliant, even so, whatever grounds there are for making merit productive of a future birth, all these do not equal a sixteenth part of the mind-release of loving-kindness. The mind-release of loving-kindness surpasses them and shines forth, bright and brilliant."
세존께서 이렇게 말씀하셨다고.... [나는 들었다].
“비구들이여! 내생을 일으키게 하는 원인이 되는 공덕을 지을 그 어떤 기반이 있다고 하더라도, 이 모든 것들은 자비심이라는 심해탈(心解脫)의 16분의 1에도 미치지 못하오. 자비심이라는 심해탈은 그것들을 능가하고 밖으로 밝고 환하게 비추지요.
모든 별들의 불빛[을 합쳐도 그것]이 달빛의 16분의 1에도 미치지 못하고 오히려 달빛이 그것들을 능가하고 밖으로 밝고 환하게 비추는 것과 똑 같이, 내생을 일으키게 하는 원인이 되는 공덕을 지을 그 어떤 기반이 있다고 하더라도 이 모든 것들이 자비심이라는 심해탈의 16분의 1에도 미치지 못하고....
가을, 우기의 마지막 달에 하늘이 맑고 구름 한 점 없을 때 솟아 올라오는 태양이 허공의 어두움을 몰아내고 밖으로 밝고 환하게 비추는 것과 똑 같이, 내생을 일으키게 하는 원인이 되는 공덕을 지을 그 어떤 기반이 있다고 하더라도 이 모든 것들이 자비심이라는 심해탈의 16분의 1에도 미치지 못하고....
그리고 밤중에, 동이 트는 순간에 샛별이 밖으로 밝고 환하게 비추는 것과 똑 같이, 내생을 일으키게 하는 원인이 되는 공덕을 지을 그 어떤 기반이라고 하더라도 이 모든 것들이 자비심이라는 심해탈의 16분의 1에도 미치지 못하오. 자비심이라는 심해탈은 그것들을 능가하고 밖으로 밝고 환하게 비추지요.”
For one who mindfully develops
Boundless loving-kindness
Seeing the destruction of clinging,
The fetters are worn away.
If with an uncorrupted mind
He pervades just one being
With loving kindly thoughts,
He makes some merit thereby.
But a noble one produces
An abundance of merit
By having a compassionate mind
Towards all living beings.
Those royal seers who conquered
The earth crowded with beings
Went about performing sacrifices:
The horse sacrifice, the man sacrifice,
The water rites, the soma sacrifice,
And that called "the Unobstructed."
But these do not share even a sixteenth part
Of a well cultivated mind of love,
Just as the entire starry host
Is deemed by the moon's radiance.
One who does not kill
Nor cause others to kill,Who does not conquer
Nor cause others to conquer,
Kindly towards all beings -
He has enmity for none.
집착의 멸진을 보아
마음을 챙기며 무한한 자비심을
닦는 사람에게는
[온갖] 속박 사라지네.
만약 그가 더럽혀지지 않은 마음으로,
바로 한 존재[중생]를
자애로운 생각으로 충만하게 한다면,
그는 그로 해서 공덕을 짓게 되네.
그렇지만 고귀한 사람은
모든 살아있는 존재[生類]들을 향해
연민의 마음을 품어서
수많은 공덕을 짓네.
존재[중생]들로 가득 찬 땅을
정복한 저 왕실의 예언자들은,
- 말 희생 제사, 인신 희생 제사,
물의 의식[浸禮], 소마 희생 제사,
그리고 “방해받지 않는 것”이라고 불리는 것 -
희생제의를 지내는 데에 열중하고 있네.
그러나 전체 별무리[星群][의 빛]이
달빛이 비치면 흐릿하게 되는 것과 똑 같이,
이런 것들은 잘 갈고 닦은 자애심의
16분의 1조차도 함께 누릴 수 없네.
죽이지 않고
다른 사람이 죽이게 하지도 않는 사람,
정복하지 않고
다른 사람이 정복하게 하지도 않고
모든 존재[중생]에 대해 인정을 품는 사람,
그는 그 누구에게도 원한을 품지 않네.
This too is the meaning of what was said by the Lord, so I heard.
이 또한 세존께서 말씀하신 것의 의미이다라고 나는 들었다.
