26. Giving
베품[布施]
This was said by the Lord....
"Bhikkhus, if beings knew, as I know, the result of giving and sharing, they would not eat without having given, nor would they allow the stain of meanness to obsess them and take root in their minds. Even if it were their last morsel, their last mouthful, they would not eat without having shared it, if there were someone to share it with. But, bhikkhus, as beings do not know, as I know, the result of giving and sharing, they eat without having given, and the stain obsesses them and takes root in their minds."
세존께서 이렇게 말씀하셨다고.... [나는 들었다].
“비구들이여! 내가 알고 있듯이, 만약 존재[중생]들이 베풂과 나눔의 과보를 안다면, 그들은 [남에게] 베풀어서 주지 않고서는 먹지 않을 것이며, 인색함이라는 때가 그들을 사로잡아 마음에 뿌리를 내리게 하지도 않을 것이오. 만약 그것을 함께 나누어야 할 누군가가 있다면, 설사 그것이 그들의 마지막 한 입 꺼리라고 할지라도 그것을 나누지 않고서는 먹지 않을 것이오. 비구들이여! 그렇지만 내가 알고 있듯이 존재[중생]들이 베풂과 나눔의 과보를 알지 못하기 때문에, 베풀어주지 않고서도 먹고 인색함이라는 때[번뇌]가 그들을 사로잡아 그들 마음속에 뿌리를 내리는 것이오.”
If beings only knew -
So said the Great Sage -
How the result of sharing
Is of such great fruit,
With a gladdened mind,
Rid of the stain of meanness,
They would duly give to noble ones
Who make what is given fruitful.
Having given much food as offerings
To those most worthy of offerings,
The donors go to heaven
On departing the human state.
Having gone to heaven they rejoice,
And enjoying pleasures there,
The unselfish experience the result
Of generously sharing with others.
위대한 성인께서 이렇게 말씀하셨네.
만약 존재[중생]들이
나눔의 과보가
그렇게 크다는 것을 알기만 한다면,
기쁜 마음으로
인색함이라는 때[번뇌]를 말끔히 없애버리고
주어진 것이 열매를 맺게 해주는
고귀한 분들에게 마땅한 때에 보시를 하게 되리.
공양을 받을 자격을 최대로 갖춘 분들에게
많은 공양 음식물 드렸으니,
시주자들은 인간계를 떠나는 순간에
천상으로 가네.
천상에 간 그들은 마음껏 즐기고,
이타적인 사람들은 그곳에서 쾌락을 만끽하면서
다른 사람들과 너그럽게 나누었던
과보를 맛보네.
