44. The Nibbana-element
닙바나[涅槃]의 경지
This was said by the Lord....
"Bhikkhus, there are these two Nibbana-elements.
What are the two? The Nibbana-element with residue left
and the Nibbana-element with no residue left.
What, bhikkhus, is the Nibbana-element with residue left?
Here a bhikkhu is an arahant, one whose taints are destroyed,
the holy life fulfilled, who has done what had to be done,
laid down the burden, attained the goal, destroyed the fetters of
being, completely released through final knowledge. However,
his five sense faculties remain unimpaired, by which he still
experiences what is agreeable and disagreeable and feels
pleasure and pain. It is the extinction of attachment, hate,
and delusion in him that is called the Nibbana-element with
residue left.
Now what, bhikkhus, is the Nibbana-element with no residue left?
Here a bhikkhu is an arahant .... completely released through final knowledge. For him, here in this very life, all that is experienced,
not being delighted in, will be extinguished. That, bhikkhus,
is called the Nibbana-element with no residue left.
These, bhikkhus, are the two Nibbana-elements."
세존께서 이렇게 말씀하셨다고.... [나는 들었다].
“비구들이여! 이러한 두 가지 닙바나[涅槃]의 경지가 있소. 두 가지가 무엇일까요? 남은 찌꺼기가 있는 닙바나의 경지[有餘涅槃]와 남은 찌꺼기가 하나도 없는 닙바나의 경지[無餘涅槃]이지요.
비구들이여! 무엇이 남은 찌꺼기가 있는 닙바나의 경지[有餘涅槃]일까요? 여기에 어떤 한 비구가 더러움[번뇌]을 멸해 버리고 성스러운 삶[梵行]을 완수한 사람, 해야 할 일을 하고 [마음의] 짐을 내려놓았으며 목적을 달성하고 존재라고 하는 속박을 끊었으며 궁극의 지혜[完全智]를 통해 완벽하게 해탈한 사람인 아라한이지요. 그렇지만 그의 다섯 가지 감각 기관[眼․耳․鼻․舌․身; 五根]은 손상되지 않은 채로 남아 있어서, 그것으로 해서 아직도 마음에 드는 것과 마음에 들지 않는 것을 경험하고 쾌락과 괴로움을 느끼지요. 남은 찌꺼기가 있는 닙바나의 경지라고 부르는 것은 그의 내부에서 집착[貪]․증오[嗔]와 미망[痴]이 멸진되는 것이지요.
자 비구들이여! 무엇이 남은 찌꺼기가 하나도 없는 닙바나의 경지[無餘涅槃]일까요? 여기에 어떤 한 비구가 ... 궁극의 지혜[完全智]를 통해 완벽하게 해탈한 사람인 아라한이지요. 그에게는 바로 이번 생에서 경험한 모든 것에 대하여 기뻐하지 않으며 [모두] 멸진될 것이오. 비구들이여! 그것이 [바로] 남은 찌꺼기가 하나도 없는 닙바나의 경지라고 부르는 것이오.
비구들이여! 이것들이 두 가지 닙바나의 경지이지요.
These two Nibbana-elements were made known
By the Seeing One, stable and unattached:
One is the element seen here and now
With residue, but with the cord of being destroyed;
The other, having no residue for the future,
Is that wherein all modes of being utterly cease.
Having understood the unconditioned state,
Released in mind with the cord of being destroyed,
They have attained to the Dhamma-essence.
Delighting in the destruction (of craving),
Those stable ones have abandoned all being.
흔들리지 않고 집착하지 않는 [모든 것을] 보시는 분께서
이 두 가지 닙바나의 경지를 가르쳐주셨네.
하나는 찌꺼기가 있지만 존재의 끈이 [모두] 소멸된,
지금 여기에서 보이는 경지이고,
다른 하나는 미래에 대한 찌꺼기[재생하겠다는 미련]가 하나도 없이
온갖 존재 형태가 완전히 그친 경지네.
조건으로 이루어지지 않은 경지[涅槃]를 이해하고
존재의 끈을 멸하여 마음으로 해탈하였으니,
그들은 진리 법의 요체를 성취하였네.
저 안정된 이들은 (갈애의) 소멸을 기뻐하면서
모든 존재를 버렸네.
