58. Craving
갈애
This was said by the Lord....
"Bhikkhus, there are these three cravings.
What three? The craving for sensual pleasures,
the craving for being, and the craving for non-being. T
hese are the three."
세존께서 이렇게 말씀하셨다고.... [나는 들었다].
“비구들이여! 이들 세 가지 갈애(渴愛)가 있소.
세 가지가 무엇일까요? 감각적 쾌락을 바라는 갈애,
존재하기 바라는 갈애 그리고 존재하지 않고자 하는[滅無]
갈애이지요. 이것들이 세 가지이지요.”
Those fettered by the bond of craving,
Whose minds delight in being this or that,
Are people in the bondage of Mara
Who enjoy no security from bondage.
Such beings continue in samsara,
Going on from birth to death.
But those who have abandoned craving,
Free from craving for being this or that,
Having attained the taints' destruction,
Though in the world, have gone beyond.
이렇게 또는 저렇게 존재하는 데에서 자기들 마음이 기뻐하면서
갈애의 속박에 사로잡힌 사람들은
속박에서 풀려난 안정감을 하나도 즐기지 않는
마라[악마]에게 속박된 사람들이네.
그와 같은 존재[중생]들은 태어남에서 죽음으로 달려가면서
윤회 속에서 떠도네.
그러나 갈애를 포기해 온 사람들은
이렇게 또는 저렇게 존재하겠다는 갈애에서 벗어나
때[번뇌]의 멸진을 성취하였으므로
이 세상에서도 [윤회를] 초월해 [깨달음의 세계로] 나아갔네.
